A tragic shooting at a popular waterfront restaurant in North Carolina left three individuals dead and eight others injured. However, authorities believe that a bar patron’s video may have thwarted the gunman the night before the attack.
Nigel Max Edge, 40, has been accused of executing a carefully planned ambush. The incident took place at the American Fish Company, a highly frequented restaurant and bar in Southport. According to police reports, Edge opened fire from a boat positioned just off the deck, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including Joy Rogers, a mother who had recently retired.
The plot may have been foiled a day prior to the shooting, as new cellphone video surfaced showcasing Edge lurking in the water. This footage, obtained by PEOPLE, was recorded during a performance by musician Dane Britt on Friday evening.
Britt’s wife documented the event. Her camera inadvertently captured Edge’s boat, cloaked in darkness. In a chilling revelation, Britt noted that the video featured a man who ducked behind an object as the camera’s focus turned to him.
“I’m thoroughly convinced that her filming made him call it off. That video saved lives,” Britt commented, underlining the importance of the footage.
The following night, Edge returned to the American Fish Company and executed his attack. Investigators disclosed that he was armed with a .300 Blackout Sig Sauer rifle, outfitted with a suppressor and scope, and he also had a .380 handgun.
Upon receiving reports of the shooting, two deputies from the sheriff’s department responded on a boat. They later spotted Edge retrieving his boat trailer. Authorities detained Edge as he was preparing to pull his vessel from the water.
Edge faces grave charges, including three counts of first-degree murder, multiple attempted murder charges, and assault with a deadly weapon. A judge has denied him bond, labeling him a flight risk and a danger to the community. He is set to return to court on October 13 for a probable cause hearing and has requested a public defender.
Britt remarked, “Had she not been out there with that camera, there’s no telling how many more people would be dead today.”
The community is now in mourning, remembering the lives lost. Joy Rogers, a retired individual who recently relocated to Southport from California, is among the victims. Her friends and family described her as a devoted wife and a loving mother, emphasizing the impact of her tragic loss.
Her church community issued a statement reflecting on her character. “She was a friend to everyone she met,” they stated, accentuating the void left by her passing.
Police Chief Todd Coring has shared that Edge suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and self-identifies as a veteran. This disclosure raises questions about his state of mind and any potential motivations underlying his actions. The Department of Defense has been contacted for further details regarding Edge’s claims.
“We understand this suspect identifies as a combat veteran. He claims to have sustained injuries in the line of duty, and he suffers from PTSD,” Coring explained.
In addition to the tragedy of this shooting, court documents have revealed disturbing beliefs espoused by Edge. He propagated anti-LGBTQ conspiracy theories and made shocking allegations against his own parents, claiming they were part of a plot against him. This troubling narrative connects his supposed mistreatment to broader events such as the Iraq War, the Abu Ghraib scandal, and prominent figures like Jeffrey Epstein.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the precarious nature of community safety and the need for vigilance. The role that everyday citizens can play in averting such disasters cannot be overstated. Additionally, it highlights the complexities surrounding mental health, accountability, and the factors that lead to such heinous acts of violence.
