GSA Responds to Misleading Media Coverage on DOGE and Workforce Management

Contrary to reports suggesting a chaotic environment within the agency, GSA asserts that it remains focused on providing efficient and effective services to its employees.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the GSA emphasized, “Over the past few days, numerous media outlets have reported on GSA’s return to office and future workforce plans. These reports include numerous quotes from anonymous sources and contain significant inaccuracies.” This response comes amid escalating national discourse surrounding the agency’s management strategies and collaborations with DOGE.

Media Outlets Shape Perceptions of GSA

Recent articles from prominent news agencies, including NPR, Politico, and The Associated Press, depicted a distressing atmosphere at GSA, linking it to DOGE’s efforts to eliminate waste in government operations. Reports indicated that GSA was closely tracking employee locations and keystrokes, leading to fears of a “grim” and “Orwellian” workspace with impending substantial staff reductions.

Responding to these claims, the GSA stated, “For the record: GSA is leading the way to reduce government spending and close the deficit in service of the American taxpayer. GSA has no plans to surveil employees. GSA leadership is being forthright with our employees, and we’re sharing the best available information with them as they make decisions regarding their future. Characterizations that GSA senior leadership are unduly pressuring employees to leave the agency are categorically untrue.”

A senior manager within GSA, with experience across multiple administrations, expressed concerns that media coverage has conflated the actions of DOGE with the agency’s appointed leadership. “GSA, like every other agency, is working in partnership with DOGE, but it’s GSA’s appointee leadership that is leading the transformation,” the manager noted.

Moreover, the senior manager refuted claims of “frantic” meetings, asserting, “Characterizations of ‘frantic’ meetings just aren’t what I’m experiencing.” Instead, the atmosphere within GSA is characterized by ongoing engagement and cooperation among staff.

This year, GSA has actively collaborated with DOGE on numerous cost-reduction initiatives. Earlier this month, GSA announced the termination of certain U.S. Agency for International Development occupancies in Washington, D.C. GSA indicated this move as part of a strategy to repurpose spaces for other government needs.

The GSA senior manager remarked that rather than fostering an environment of fear, the agency is dedicated to enhancing efficiency in partnership with DOGE. “GSA’s appointed leadership is working hand in hand with our career executives to thoughtfully find solutions that meet the administration’s goals of streamlining government and delivering effectively and efficiently for the American taxpayer,” the statement added.
