Serena Williams has issued a straightforward response to the backlash she received regarding her appearance in Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show. The tennis champion described her participation as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Having retired from professional tennis in 2022, Williams took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes glimpse into her cameo. The tennis superstar articulated her reasons for accepting Lamar’s invitation.
In her Instagram post, Williams recounted how Kendrick Lamar and his team approached her. They expressed admiration for her iconic dance moves, recalling her performance at the Olympics after securing a gold medal.
“When @kendricklamar and team called and was like, ‘we’ve been trying to do something forever, what about this? We loved your crip walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal.’ I’m like, Super Bowl? Are you serious?
“When in the world would I ever be able to dance at a superbowl? (Never) let’s do it!” she wrote.
Williams reflected on her famed dance at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, declaring that she had long believed it would have significance in the future. Its connection to the Super Bowl represents a unique crossover between sports and entertainment.
Despite her excitement, Williams faced criticism following her performance. Detractors targeted her choice of dance and questioned her decision to perform alongside Kendrick Lamar, a figure perceived as a rival to rapper Drake, with whom Williams previously had a relationship.
Prominent sports analyst Stephen A. Smith voiced his disapproval, remarking he would consider divorcing his spouse if she were “trolling her ex” through such performances. His commentary reflects the heightened scrutiny public figures experience regarding their personal lives.
In response to the criticism, Alexis Ohanian, Williams’ husband and co-founder of Reddit, came to her defense. He shared a post on X, noting that many critics seemed unaware of the backlash Williams had faced for her dance at Wimbledon thirteen years ago. He emphasized the historical context surrounding her dance, suggesting that it transcends the music itself.
“Some of y’all have no idea how criticized Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago and it shows… This is bigger than the music,” Ohanian stated boldly.
Williams ultimately closed her remarks with a decisive statement. She reiterated her perspective on the experience, indicating a sense of finality in the discussion.
“End of story,” she declared.
This incident illustrates the ongoing challenges that public figures contend with when they step outside their conventional roles. The intersection of sports, entertainment, and personal life draws significant attention, often from those eager to voice their opinions.
As the world of sports evolves and celebrities continue to cross over into new arenas, the conversations around such events will likely persist. Williams remains a dominant force with a storied legacy, and her decisions will continue to inspire both admiration and debate.
