A Netflix executive’s past social media posts regarding transgender individuals, particularly children, have gained attention amid mounting criticism of the streaming service. Many conservatives express anger over what they perceive as Netflix promoting ‘woke Democrat gender ideology’ to younger audiences.
This week, a widespread campaign to cancel Netflix surged on social media. The initiative gained traction after billionaire Elon Musk, along with the conservative account Libs of TikTok and other online influencers, resurfaced a series of posts highlighting pro-transgender content aimed at children.
Musk voiced his disapproval by stating, ‘This is not OK’ in response to a viral clip from a show titled ‘Dead End Paranormal Park’, featuring a character coming out as transgender. Another Netflix production, ‘Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City’, spotlighted transgender drag queens, while ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’ included a storyline where a child reprimanded doctors for using a trans child’s biological pronouns.
Netflix’s ‘Transformers Earthspark’ faces scrutiny as it introduces the term ‘nonbinary’ to audiences as young as seven, while ‘Monster High: The Movie’ includes teenage characters discussing their preferred pronouns. The backlash escalated with Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, labeling the content as ‘absolutely disgusting’ and accusing Netflix of indoctrinating children.
The streaming giant has yet to respond to requests for comments concerning this ongoing backlash.
Wade Davis, Netflix’s Vice President of Inclusion Strategy, appears unfazed by the controversy. In 2020, during a podcast discussing ‘anti-Blackness’, Netflix described him as an ‘educator on gender, race, and orientation equality’.
Prior to his employment with Netflix in 2023, Davis played in the National Football League and served as the NFL’s first LGBT inclusion consultant. He also portrayed a surrogate for President Barack Obama, as noted in his Netflix biography.
Davis has not shied away from discussing transgender issues on social media. In July, he posted a critical message about an Uber driver who exhibited transphobic behavior.
He articulated in 2020, ‘Identifying within the trans spectrum challenges the heteronormative binary, and anytime you challenge the standards of a nation, you become vulnerable to societal backlash’, elaborating on the danger and violence that often threaten transgender individuals.
In earlier posts from 2019, Davis discussed how being transgender relates more to identity than to biology. He highlighted how transgender individuals often realize they are being treated in ways that conflict with their identity from a very young age, often between the ages of three to five, due to societal pressures.
In addition to advocating for transgender rights, Davis has publicly addressed the shortcomings of the gay community regarding their support for transgender individuals. In a 2017 post, he stated, ‘The gay community, including me to some extent, has failed the trans community… Failed. And left them behind.’
Following the contentious 2016 election, Davis used social media to voice his concerns. He reminisced about marginalized groups—women, people of color, and transgender individuals—who felt their lives were undervalued in the wake of Donald Trump’s electoral victory.
Moreover, Davis advocated for transgender individuals’ rights to use restrooms that align with their gender identity, emphasizing that these individuals need protections for their dignity.
Davis has actively participated in initiatives supporting LGBTQ+ youth, such as his praise for an event at the Hetrick-Martin Institute, which serves this demographic. In 2013, he referred to the event as ‘amazing’ and congratulated the talented young girls involved.
Despite the increasing scrutiny, Netflix has remained silent regarding whether Wade Davis plays a role in shaping its children’s content. The company did not provide answers to inquiries about the specific programs he has worked on or his influence on content planning.
