Lessons in Faith from Denzel Washington: A Retired Pastor’s Reflection

In a recent enlightening conversation, renowned actor Denzel Washington opened up about his spiritual journey and the importance of faith. It began with a simple yet profound invitation: ‘Hey, why don’t we start with a prayer?’ These words set an authentic tone for an engaging dialogue centered around spirituality, which I conducted as part of a collection of interviews for my upcoming book titled ‘Witness to Belief: Conversations on Faith and Meaning,’ slated for publication by Church Publishing in October 2025.

Having retired after 30 years of dedicated service as an Episcopal priest, I was eager to connect with those who share my commitment to exploring faith. My previous phone interactions with Denzel had prepared me for our first in-person meeting, which kicked off with his warm greeting, ‘Call me Denzel, and come on, man, give me a hug!’

Through his speeches and public appearances, Denzel has often expressed his faith openly. Thus, I was excited to gain insights into his spiritual life. Our conversation became an enriching experience, providing me, an ordained minister, with fresh perspectives on my own faith journey.

The Prophetic Encounter

At the age of 20, while working in his mother’s beauty salon, a customer named Ruth Green unknowingly prophesied Denzel’s future. She scribbled on a piece of paper, declaring, ‘Boy, you are going to travel the world and preach to millions of people.’ Even though Ms. Green struggled with the spelling of ‘prophecy,’ Denzel’s mother guided her and even added the title ‘Reverend.’

Reflecting on this pivotal experience, Denzel recalled, ‘I was thinking, ‘Who is this crazy woman?’ But now I understand that the Lord has granted me the opportunity to reach many people.’ This realization highlights his journey toward embracing faith and advocacy.

Reevaluating Life’s Priorities

As we continued our discussion, Denzel shared profound reflections on life as understood through a spiritual lens. He stated, ‘The older I get, the simpler life gets. I don’t want to make more money… I don’t care about winning Oscars… I don’t need those things. I want God to be in charge of everything and to guide me wherever He wants me to go.’

In today’s society, where many chase after wealth, power, or fame in hopes of finding deeper meaning, Denzel emphasized that these pursuits often lead to disappointment. He articulated how the allure of ‘more’ can deceive us, leading us to believe that material gain equates to fulfillment.

Renowned artist Amy Grant, another interviewee for my book, echoes this sentiment, asserting that accumulating more does not equate to a deeper connection to life or purpose. The fleeting satisfaction gained from social media applause is a testament to this illusion.

The Value of True Connection

So, what brings enduring satisfaction? My brief time with Denzel reminded me that a life anchored in spirituality offers far greater worth than any earthly possession. Denzel’s introspection revealed that true fulfillment transcends material gain.

When I probed how he wishes to be remembered, he initially hesitated. But eventually, he asserted, ‘A man of God.’ This label encapsulates a rigorous process of growth fostered not through fame or fortune, but through authentic personal encounters with the divine.

A Relationship Diligently Pursued

Despite his international fame, Denzel remains dedicated to nurturing a personal relationship with God. He engages in prayer, Bible study, and regular worship, not solely to acquire knowledge but rather to deepen his connection with the divine. He aptly summarized his faith journey with the phrase, ‘It is not what you know; it is Who you know.’

Even as I navigate my post-retirement life, Denzel’s insights serve as a profound reminder of my initial calling to the priesthood — a commitment to education that endures throughout my spiritual journey.

Finding Peace in Turbulent Times

In today’s chaotic and sometimes disheartening world, Denzel’s perspective offers essential guidance. Following our discussion, at his baptism a few months later, he declared, ‘God has done a lot for me, but He will do a lot for anyone who trusts in Him.’ These words resonate deeply in a world ripe with uncertainty.

As we look toward 2025 and beyond, we must remember what matters most. I invite readers to join me on this journey through my book, where I delve into twelve conversations that illuminate faith and purpose. Alongside Denzel, voices like Dr. Jane Goodall, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Dr. Francis Collins, and many others enrich this exploration of spirituality.

By the journey’s end, I believe many will find themselves echoing Denzel’s sentiment: ‘I don’t want more… I want God.’ This profound understanding can reshape our lives and rekindle our connections with the divine.
