What was expected to be a memorable evening at the Emmy Awards turned into a challenging night for acclaimed actor Eric Dane. The 52-year-old star of “Grey’s Anatomy” revealed in a recent interview that he was hospitalized on the very night of the Emmy ceremony after suffering a fall in his kitchen.
Earlier this year, Dane disclosed his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. During an interview with a major newspaper, he shared the painful details of his hospital visit. “ALS is a nasty disease. … So I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head,” he said.
Dane was scheduled to present an award at the ceremony, a role he had anticipated fulfilling alongside former co-star Jesse Williams to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their popular show. Unfortunately, Williams ended up presenting the award for outstanding directing for a drama series on his own, following Dane’s abrupt absence.
Reflecting on the event, Dane expressed his disappointment. “I missed an opportunity I was really looking forward to. It would have been great to see Jesse and get reunited with some of my peers, and to be able to present in front of my colleagues. I thought it would have been a special moment,” he said. “I was really upset about it, but you know, there was nothing I could do about it.”
Dane announced his diagnosis of ALS in April 2025. This neurodegenerative disease affects motor neurons, which are critical nerve cells located in the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord that govern voluntary muscle movement.
As he continues to navigate his health challenges, Dane’s family is also adjusting to the realities imposed by this illness. His wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, recently opened up about the emotional journey their family is facing.
In a heartfelt interview, Gayheart described the profound toll that Dane’s condition has taken on her and their daughters, Billie, aged 15, and Georgia, aged 13. They have sought the assistance of professional therapists, aiming to find hope amid turmoil. “We’re just trying to have some hope and do it with dignity, grace, and love,” Gayheart shared. She acknowledged the heartbreaking impact the situation has had on their children. “My girls are really suffering, and we’re just trying to get through it. It’s a tough time,” she stated.
Dane previously shared his diagnosis in a poignant statement where he expressed gratitude for having his family by his side. He appealed to everyone for privacy as they face this challenging chapter together.
The couple’s relationship has also been under scrutiny, especially following Gayheart’s decision to dismiss her 2018 divorce petition just a month before Dane revealed his ALS diagnosis. They initially wed in 2004 after dating for a year but had previously separated due to
