The United States Department of Education has initiated Title IX investigations into athletic associations in California and Minnesota. These actions follow announcements from both states declaring they would disregard an executive order issued by President Trump. This order aimed to restrict transgender athletes from participating in girls and women’s sports.
On Thursday, the Minnesota State High School League affirmed its decision to permit transgender athletes to compete alongside girls. This policy stands in direct opposition to Trump’s executive order, which sought to limit such participation.
Similarly, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) announced its commitment to adhere to state laws that allow athletes to compete based on their gender identity. These proactive measures signal a growing clash between state policies and federal directives regarding transgender athletes.
Craig Trainor, the acting assistant secretary for civil rights, emphasized that both the Minnesota State High School League and CIF must comply with federal law despite their state-level decisions. He criticized these organizations for what he termed
