A sudden and powerful blizzard struck the Tibetan slopes of Mount Everest, leaving nearly 1,000 hikers stranded in remote camps during China’s National Day holiday weekend. Reports from state media detailed the alarming situation that unfolded, impacting both local trekkers and international adventurers.
On Sunday, key news outlets such as Reuters and Jimu reported that at least 350 individuals have successfully reached safety. Contact has been established with several hundred others who remain trapped in the snow-covered region.
The storm hit on Friday, delivering heavy snow and rain across the entire Himalayan range. The harshest conditions were recorded near Everest’s eastern Kangshung face, where elevations rise beyond 13,779 feet.
As snowfall continued through Saturday, it severely obstructed roads and trails, blocking off access to several popular trekking routes frequented during China’s eight-day National Day holiday.
China Central Television reported that local rescue teams guided several hundred trekkers to safety at Qudang township. Experts predict that hundreds more will make their way to safety as village residents and emergency responders work diligently to clear snowfall from mountain passes.
According to state-backed Jimu news, nearly 1,000 people, including hikers, guides, and local support staff, were trapped when the severe blizzard struck. Rescue operations have mobilized hundreds of local villagers alongside members of Tibet’s Blue Sky Rescue Team. They have been receiving numerous distress calls regarding collapsed tents and cases of hypothermia.
In the chilling words of one trekker named Chen Geshuang, “It was so wet and cold in the mountains, and hypothermia was a real risk.” Chen was part of an 18-person trekking team that successfully reached Qudang. He noted that, “The weather this year is not normal. The guide said he had never encountered such weather in October. And it happened all too suddenly.”
The Tibetan regional government has organized coordinated search and rescue operations in response to the crisis. Heavy machinery has been dispatched to reopen snow-blocked roads leading to the impacted campsites.
On Saturday evening, authorities suspended ticket sales and closed entry to the Everest Scenic Area as a precautionary measure. The Tingri County Tourism Company communicated these restrictions through its official WeChat account. Despite these precautions, it remains uncertain whether trekkers on the north face of Everest, which is more easily accessible by road and also located in Tibet, were affected by this weather event.
The extreme weather conditions have not only affected Mount Everest but also severely impacted neighboring Nepal. Reports indicate that heavy rains have led to landslides and flash floods in the region, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 47 individuals since Friday.
In the eastern Ilam district near the Indian border, thirty-five individuals lost their lives in separate landslides, while others are still unaccounted for after being swept away by floodwaters, as reported by Reuters.
As rescue efforts continue, the combination of harsh weather and challenging terrain presents significant obstacles. Local villagers have taken on critical roles in assisting rescue teams, demonstrating a strong sense of community and resilience during this testing time.
Many individuals have stepped up to help, showcasing bravery as they fight against the elements to reach those affected by the blizzard. The dedication of these volunteers and rescue teams highlights the importance of solidarity in the face of disaster.
As the situation evolves, anxious families await news of their loved ones still trapped in the treacherous snow. With each passing hour, the urgency for continued rescue operations grows. The eyes of the world remain on Mount Everest, where nature’s fury has once again reminded us of the dangers that lie within its majestic heights.
