West Virginia Attorney General John “JB” McCuskey announced on Monday that his office is spearheading a new multistate investigation targeting major technology firms for allegedly overstating their commitments to clean energy—a practice commonly referred to as greenwashing.
McCuskey, alongside 15 other state attorneys general, including Montana’s Austin Knudsen, is examining tech giants such as Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft. These companies are accused of claiming to be entirely powered by renewable energy. However, McCuskey argues that these claims are misleading as they often rely on renewable energy certificates, which allow them to assert green energy usage while still utilizing electricity generated from coal and natural gas.
According to McCuskey, the operation behind these claims resembles what he describes as a deceptive system. He elaborated that it is possible for a data center to receive power from coal or natural gas sources while purchasing credits from a green energy producer miles away, thus presenting a false image of carbon-neutral operations.
McCuskey compared this misleading tactic to a celebrity flying on a private jet yet claiming to be eco-friendly by purchasing carbon credits. He believes such comparisons illustrate the absurdity of the claims being made by these tech firms.
While the investigation highlights critical concerns surrounding transparency, McCuskey maintains that the focus of their inquiry is on the systemic issues rather than the tech companies themselves. He emphasized the significance of fostering positive relationships with these businesses, recognizing their pivotal role in economic development and the future of technology.
The attorney general voiced concerns that these practices distort the energy market and jeopardize the reliability of electric grids, particularly in coal-producing states like West Virginia and Montana. He described the current credit system as an example of
