Former President Joe Biden made an appearance at Game 2 of the National League Division Series featuring the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers. His presence added excitement as he nearly witnessed a dramatic ninth-inning comeback.
As the game progressed into the bottom of the ninth, the Phillies trailed 4-1. In a remarkable effort, they managed to string together three consecutive hits, closing the gap to 4-3. However, a crucial sacrifice bunt misfire turned the tide; instead of placing the tying run on third base with only one out, the runner ended up on first.
Despite the setback, the Phillies moved on to put runners on the corners with two outs in a high-stakes situation. Their key player, Trea Turner—who boasts the highest batting average in the National League—stood at the plate. He hit a ground ball to Tommy Edman, the Dodgers’ second baseman. Edman, pressured by Turner’s speed, rushed his throw. Although it fell short, first baseman Freddie Freeman managed to scoop it, securing the Dodgers’ 4-3 victory.
The Dodgers now lead the best-of-five series 2-0, preparing to return home for Game 3 scheduled for Wednesday.
At Citizens Bank Park, Biden was seen in an elevated section as fans captured and shared photos on social media. Biden had not attended any sporting events during his presidency from 2021 until January. However, during his tenure as Vice President under Barack Obama, he often engaged in various sporting events. His wife, Jill Biden, attended Game 4 of the 2022 World Series, where the Phillies faced off against the Houston Astros, as well as a regular-season game that September.
Throughout his political career, Biden has displayed a keen interest in sports. Notable moments include attending a men’s college basketball game between Georgetown and Duke in 2010 with Obama. He also threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Baltimore Orioles game against the New York Yankees in 2009 and watched the Phillies and Yankees clash in the World Series later that year alongside Jill Biden. The couple has often been spotted at MLB games during Biden’s vice presidency.
After leaving office for the first time, Biden celebrated the Philadelphia Eagles’ victory at Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots, taking part in the victory festivities on the field.
Recently, President Donald Trump also attended an MLB game, where he watched the New York Yankees play against the Detroit Tigers on September 11, coinciding with the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. This marked the first time a sitting president had attended a major league baseball game since Trump went to the World Series between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals in 2019.
The Phillies faced an uphill battle, losing Game 1 of the series with a score of 5-3. Game 2 turned into a pitcher’s duel, highlighting the tension as the teams entered the seventh inning scoreless. However, after starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo found himself in trouble, the Dodgers capitalized on his removal from the game, scoring four runs.
The winner of this National League Division Series will move on to face either the Milwaukee Brewers or the Chicago Cubs, setting the stage for an exciting postseason.
Stay tuned for further updates as the series progresses, showcasing the competitive spirit of baseball at its finest.
