Lockdown Imposed at New York Prison Following Inmate Assault on Guards

A New York state prison has been placed on lockdown after a serious incident involving inmates and corrections officers. This event raised alarms about ongoing staffing shortages within the facility.

The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, known as DOCCS, confirmed that the Collins Correctional Facility, located in Erie County, suspended normal operations following the altercation early Wednesday morning, as reported by the Albany Times Union.

Incident Overview

At approximately 1 a.m., three separate dormitories were overtaken by inmates, leading to a chaotic scene where staff were forced to evacuate. A representative from the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association relayed details to local media outlets.

During the confrontation, officers utilized measures of force, resulting in the seizure of two contraband cell phones. Reports indicate that the situation escalated when other inmates became agitated while attempting to check on those involved in the initial incident.

Staff Response and Aftermath

Fortunately, facility staff and supervisory personnel managed to deescalate the scenario without further violence. Inmates subsequently returned to their assigned quarters, and there were no hostages taken.

Following an assessment, corrections officials determined that all personnel and inmates were accounted for and remained safe during this disturbance. Vice President Kenny Gold of the NYSCOPBA disclosed that three correctional officers suffered minor injuries during the encounter.
