A dramatic incident unfolded last week in Layton, Utah, when the driver of an SUV narrowly escaped a catastrophic collision with a Utah Transit Authority passenger train. Newly released video footage captured the tense moments before the train smashed into the vehicle, highlighting the critical seconds that saved the driver’s life.
The footage, filmed from within the locomotive, shows the train speeding toward a railroad crossing. As the train approached, viewers could see a white SUV partially obstructing the tracks.
“Oh, come on,” the train operator exclaimed, as the horn blared from hundreds of yards away. The urgency in the operator’s voice mirrored the alarming situation unfolding on the track.
With insufficient time to stop, the locomotive collided with the SUV, producing a loud thud resonating throughout the train. Another perspective of the crash, captured by nearby security cameras, shows the SUV rolling up to the crossing as the red lights began to flash and the gate arm descended.
Instead of halting before the lowering gate, the driver pressed on, nearly grazing the arm before continuing onto the tracks.
Realizing the perilous position, the driver slammed the brakes, stopping with the rear tires teetering on the rails. Faced with the sudden realization of crossing onto the tracks, the driver quickly shifted the SUV into reverse, unintentionally striking the gate arm while trying to exit the danger zone.
The vehicle pushed the gate arm backward before finally coming to a stop. The driver then exited the SUV and swiftly walked away, just moments before the train thundered past.
Seconds after the driver abandoned the SUV, the train collided with the vehicle, sending it spinning, ultimately mangling its front end upon striking the gate arm and its support post.
UTA public information officer Gavin Gustafson discussed the event with local news outlet KSLTV. He expressed relief that everyone involved escaped unharmed.
“It’s easy to watch the video and wish the driver had either reversed or pulled forward,” Gustafson reflected. “However, in such moments, people often react out of shock.”
Gustafson cautioned against second-guessing the driver’s split-second decisions, noting that visibility could have been compromised by other factors, including the possibility of an oncoming train.
Despite Gustafson’s perspective, he did not respond immediately to Fox News Digital’s request for further comments regarding the incident.
Local estimates indicate that the collision resulted in damages exceeding $100,000. Although the gate and crossing post suffered severe damage, the latter was reportedly repaired within 24 hours with assistance from the city of Layton.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can occur at railroad crossings. It underscores the importance of proper awareness when approaching these intersections.
While the driver of the SUV faced a critical moment of decision, the outcome could have been markedly different had he not managed to escape. This event not only highlights the risks present at crossings but also the unpredictable nature of human reactions in high-stress situations.
In sum, the fortunate outcome for the SUV driver was a combination of evasive actions and perhaps sheer luck, avoiding a potentially tragic accident. Observers of the video are likely left pondering their own responses in similarly daunting scenarios.
