One of the most significant moments in my life was when I laced up my boots and took the oath to the Constitution as a member of the Illinois Army National Guard. This oath symbolizes a commitment to serve the nation, honoring every American.
Having proudly served as a United States soldier, I hold our military in the highest regard. However, I cannot stand by and watch as a five-time draft dodger exploits our armed forces for personal gain and the detriment of our country.
Last week at Quantico, President Trump, who prefers calling the Pentagon the “Department of War,” addressed top military leaders with alarming statements. He indicated plans to use American cities as “training grounds” for our troops.
Let that statement resonate. The commander in chief wants our National Guardsmen to “train” against the very citizens they swore to protect. Just last month, he claimed that Chicago would soon experience what he describes as the “Department of War.” Now, amidst these threats, he is deploying hundreds of National Guardsmen into Chicago.
For months, Trump has promoted fabricated narratives of chaos and crime in American cities, attempting to justify the deployment of troops against local officials’ wishes. First, it was Los Angeles, followed by Washington D.C. Now, he has set his sights on Portland, where a federal judge, appointed by him, recently blocked his deployment efforts. The judge stated that Trump’s justifications were “untethered to facts.”
In simpler terms, he is misleading the public.
In Chicago alone, Trump’s agents have engaged in disturbing actions. Reports have surfaced of innocent Americans being detained, citizens denied legal representation, and children being zip-tied. Authorities have arrested elected officials, raided private residences, and even injured journalists. In recent incidents, two civilians were shot, one tragically losing his life, amidst dubious claims of justification for the lethal force used.
Trump’s agenda is becoming clear. He targets cities that oppose him, punishing them for their resistance. This pattern reveals a man who attempts to present himself as a leader while lacking the courage and moral compass expected from a president.
While targeting predominantly blue cities may serve his immediate political interests, there lies a serious risk. If allowed to continue, this strategy paves the way for any president to misuse military power against any city or community without accountability, for any fabricated reason.
It is essential to understand that sending troops to intimidate American citizens does nothing to enhance national security. The National Guard’s role does not include policing civilians in their communities. These soldiers are neither trained nor authorized to carry out law enforcement activities in urban settings. Trump’s deployments reflect a misguided approach from an authoritarian playbook, jeopardizing civil rights while diverting soldiers from their primary mission.
We recognize that Trump’s actions are not genuinely about law and order. If he sincerely valued these principles, he would engage and cooperate with local and state officials. Instead, he diverts troops from essential training missions to further his personal objectives.
He engages in activities that undermine local law enforcement, freezing and slashing federal funds that would help hire and equip police departments. By doing so, he effectively defunds the police while promoting policies leading to increased violence.
Trump is squandering millions of taxpayer dollars to create an atmosphere of fear among law-abiding citizens and legal residents simply exercising their First Amendment rights. He reallocates federal resources from critical operations that disrupt drug trafficking, dismantle terrorist threats, and protect families from cyber-attacks.
During my commute, I passed by some of the National Guardsmen currently activated. My heart aches for them. Those brave individuals swore an oath to defend our Constitution, not to support a president who avoids military service.
They committed themselves to the defense of free speech, not to stifle it. Their willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice was for the country, not for the sake of a single individual’s inflated sense of self-worth.
No city asked for this military presence. Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Portland, and Chicago are all bearing the brunt of his misguided actions. Our servicemembers deserve far better. I cannot remain silent while he dishonors their service and sacrifices, undermining the trust they have built with the American public over decades.
While I no longer wear the uniform, it hangs proudly in my Senate office. Now, I spend countless hours in the Capitol, but my commitment to the strength and safety of our nation remains unwavering. If only Trump could recognize the importance of protecting what we hold dear.
We must work together to ensure that our military is respected and our freedoms protected from political exploitation. The integrity of our armed forces cannot be compromised by anyone, regardless of their position.
