Transforming Public Education in Appalachia: The New Lexington Schools Model

In the heart of southeast Ohio, a remarkable transformation is taking place in the public education system. The New Lexington school district is not just weathering the storm of declining high school test scores; it is driving economic and community revitalization throughout Appalachia. This district is proving that public education can be a powerful engine for opportunity, effectively meeting the needs of local students and their families.

Hands-On Learning and Career Preparation

New Lexington schools stand out for their commitment to providing students with early exposure to hands-on learning and career exploration. On a recent visit, students demonstrated their skills through various projects, ranging from managing crops and livestock on the school farm to operating phlebotomy labs and working in an industrial kitchen. The district also boasts a workforce development center, incorporating a health clinic and adult education programs, ensuring that students are well-prepared for life beyond high school.

Building Partnerships for Success

Support from local partnerships and grants has allowed New Lexington to expand its vocational programs significantly. A welding program, a fabrication lab, and an electrical trades pathway have all been established in collaboration with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. As a result, students graduate with industry-recognized credentials and opportunities for apprenticeships, setting them on a path to successful careers. Collaborations with Genesis HealthCare System enable students to gain practical experience as phlebotomists and healthcare workers, simultaneously addressing regional workforce shortages.

Diverse Learning Opportunities

The district recognizes the importance of providing a wide range of programs to cater to various interests. Currently, students have access to programs encompassing drone certification, media production, and more. Future initiatives are planned to include advanced manufacturing and broadband technology, ensuring that the curriculum remains relevant in an ever-evolving job market.

Holistic Approaches to Student Well-Being

New Lexington also emphasizes the well-being of students by taking a holistic approach to education. The district invests in programs that promote mental and emotional health, generating an impressive return on investment. Research indicates that every dollar spent on such initiatives leads to an average of seven dollars reinvested into the community.

Furthermore, all students benefit from free breakfast, lunch, and dinner, supported through partnerships with local agencies that provide adequate counseling and mental health services. The district has expanded preschool access to five days a week and offers robust after-school services that support families. To address transportation challenges, schools have introduced driver’s education programs to ensure students can reach their employment opportunities.

Innovative Childcare Solutions for Educators

Recognizing the challenges faced by teachers and staff, New Lexington has implemented innovative childcare solutions. The Cub Academy daycare program provides affordable childcare options for educators and community members. This initiative not only supports families but also offers students in the education program valuable hands-on experience as they earn college credits while providing care and instruction.

Engaging Students and Enhancing Futures

At a time when many young people feel disengaged from their educational experiences, New Lexington’s model stands as a beacon of hope. The district’s focus on career technical education and career exploration actively engages students, empowering them to take charge of their futures. This integrated experience ensures that all students participate in vocational opportunities, breaking down the traditional barriers associated with career tracks.

Remarkable Outcomes and Growing Enrollment

The results of this innovative approach speak for themselves. Over the past school year, approximately 780 students enrolled in New Lexington’s programs earned 1,551 industry credentials tied to local job opportunities. The district’s graduation rate has soared from 78 percent in 2018 to a remarkable 99 percent today. Additionally, attendance rates have improved, and enrollment continues to rise as families recognize the value of the public education offered in this district.

Voices of Change: Student Perspectives

During recent visits, students shared their personal experiences and the positive impact New Lexington’s approach has had on their lives. One student involved in an apprenticeship program with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers expressed gratitude for the skills and knowledge he acquired. Another student in the media program highlighted how graduating with an associate degree provides a solid foundation for his future.

Emphasizing Community Collaboration

New Lexington’s success stems from a shared belief in the power of community. Educators, unions, businesses, and nonprofits work together to create innovative programs that nurture students and families. Teachers feel supported and respected, which fosters a positive educational environment that encourages collaboration and growth.

Addressing Rural Challenges Through Innovation

The New Lexington area faces many challenges common to rural communities, including poverty, opioid addiction, and limited resources. Despite these obstacles, the district has not shied away but has instead sought partnerships to reimagine public education as a catalyst for community transformation.

Educators actively engage with families and local businesses to align school programming with community needs. This strategic approach reflects a commitment to creating pathways to sustainable employment, with initiatives designed to support students from third grade onward. By challenging perceptions of rural education, New Lexington is paving the way for a brighter future.

A Model for Public Education Reform

Other areas across the country can learn valuable lessons from New Lexington’s approach. Investing in hands-on project-based learning can spark students’ interests and talents, encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. Nationwide, Career and Technical Education programs boast high graduation rates, with nearly 95 percent of students graduating and 70 percent advancing to college.

By providing tangible opportunities for students, rejuvenating the local economy, and uniting communities, public education can fulfill its promise. As New Lexington demonstrates, the path to the American dream is firmly rooted in quality public education. Strengthening these systems is vital for the future of our youth and our nation.
