Mamdani’s Lead Narrows as Cuomo Gains Momentum in NYC Mayoral Race

As Election Day approaches in less than four weeks, Zohran Mamdani still holds a double-digit lead in the race to become the next mayor of New York City. However, recent polling indicates that former Governor Andrew Cuomo is significantly narrowing the gap.

The Quinnipiac University poll reveals that Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and state lawmaker from Queens, commands 46% support among likely voters. This lead comes after his surprising victory in June over Cuomo and nine other candidates, securing the Democratic Party’s mayoral nomination.

In the same survey, Cuomo, who stepped down as governor in 2021 amid a series of scandals, is now running as an independent candidate in the general election. He has captured 33% of the voters’ support.

Republican Candidate Sliwa Remains Relevant

Curtis Sliwa, co-founder of the Guardian Angels, is again the Republican nominee in this election cycle and has garnered 15% support, according to the poll. His performance is notable in a city that typically favors Democratic candidates.

This latest survey was conducted from October 3 to October 7, following the withdrawal of embattled Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat who was previously seeking re-election as an independent.

Mamdani’s Lead: A Shift in Dynamics

In the prior Quinnipiac poll, which took place in early September, Mamdani enjoyed a wider 22-point lead over Cuomo, receiving 45% to Cuomo’s 23%, with Sliwa at 15% and Adams at 12%.

Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Mary Snow commented on the shifting dynamics: Although the numbers have changed, Mamdani maintains a consistent frontrunner status with his lead intact. However, a significant portion of Adams’ former supporters appears to have migrated to Cuomo.

Cuomo’s campaign spokesman, Rich Azzopardi, articulated a different interpretation of the findings, asserting that the race is decisively shifting. He noted that Mamdani’s numbers appear stagnant, suggesting a lack of momentum for the frontrunner.

Demographic Insights and Enthusiasm Levels

The poll also reveals that Mamdani’s strongest backing comes from Democrats, who support him at a rate of 60%, while Asian American voters demonstrate 67% support. Furthermore, 62% of voters aged 18 to 34 and 60% of those aged 35 to 49 indicate they favor him, which reflects his appeal among younger demographics.

On the other hand, Cuomo receives substantial support from Jewish voters, who back him by 60%. Sliwa finds his strongest base among Republicans, who show a 54% approval rating for his candidacy.

In terms of enthusiasm levels, Mamdani leads with 90% of his supporters expressing either strong or somewhat intense enthusiasm. In comparison, 85% of Sliwa’s backers are similarly engaged, while enthusiasm drops significantly to 69% among Cuomo supporters.

The Significance of Mamdani’s Candidacy

If elected, Mamdani would make history as the first Muslim and millennial mayor of New York City, representing a significant shift in the political landscape.

Mamdani’s rise to the Democratic primary victory can be attributed to his energetic campaign, which focused heavily on affordability within the city and the increasing cost of living. His grassroots movement has gained traction, bolstered by support from prominent progressive figures such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.

His innovative approach, particularly on social media, allowed him to engage low-propensity voters effectively. Proposals such as eliminating fares for New York City’s public bus system, making CUNY tuition-free, freezing rents in municipal housing, providing free childcare for children up to five years old, and establishing government-operated grocery stores have resonated with many constituents.

Facing Opposition and Criticism

Despite his supportive base, Mamdani has encountered significant criticism from his opponents. They have condemned not only his far-left proposed policies but also his vocal stance on Israel and his past remarks regarding the New York City Police Department. His plan to shift certain responsibilities away from the NYPD towards community-focused social services has sparked controversy among voters and rivals alike.

With the election rapidly approaching, the dynamics of the race continue to evolve. Voter sentiment may shift further as candidates ramp up their campaigns and address voters’ concerns in the final weeks leading to Election Day.

Looking Ahead: Implications for the Future of NYC

The developments in this tightly contested race suggest that both Mamdani and Cuomo have the potential to capture key voter blocs as they aim for the mayoralty of New York City. The ongoing shifts may only amplify the urgency for candidates to articulate their platforms clearly and engage more deeply with the electorate.
