Doctors Without Borders, known in French as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), has long been recognized for its commitment to providing humanitarian aid in conflict zones. However, a former leader of the organization is vocalizing serious concerns about its current stance in Gaza, claiming that the group has become aligned with Hamas.
Alain Destexhe, a physician who was part of MSF in the 1980s and later served as its secretary general in the 1990s, expressed his disappointment in an interview with Fox News Digital. He argues that the organization has strayed from its foundational principles of neutrality and impartiality.
Destexhe stated, “It would have been impossible during my tenure as secretary general for MSF to exhibit the bias that it shows now in Gaza. At that time, we defined ourselves as a neutral and impartial humanitarian entity. Today, I believe MSF is supporting Hamas and opposing Israel.”
On October 12, 2023, shortly after the horrific attack by Hamas that left over 250 people dead and many others kidnapped, MSF released a statement condemning the violence while also calling for an end to Israeli military actions in Gaza. Notably absent from their remarks was any specific mention of the hostages taken by Hamas.
In its announcement, MSF expressed shock at the brutal killings carried out by Hamas and condemned Israel’s extensive military campaigns against Gaza. The statement read: “MSF is appalled by the horrific mass killings of civilians by Hamas and by the large-scale military actions currently undertaken by Israel against Gaza. We call for an immediate cessation of indiscriminate violence and for safe passage for civilians so they can access safety.”
Despite this balanced stance, Destexhe highlighted troubling posts from social media that he claims belong to MSF personnel. He indicated that some staff members appeared to celebrate the events of October 7, raising questions about the organization’s internal culture and alignment in Gaza. Furthermore, he pointed out that a significant portion of MSF’s workforce in the region consists of Palestinian nationals, which complicates their operational neutrality.
Operating in Gaza necessitates collaboration with Hamas, as the group governs all civil structures and medical facilities within the enclave. Destexhe maintained that operational independence would have been unthinkable during his leadership. “At that time, we would have refused to work with any entity classified as a totalitarian and terrorist organization,” he explained.
Destexhe urged MSF to reconsider its position, suggesting a complete withdrawal from Gaza as a potential solution to its perceived bias. He argued, “MSF must say, ‘We refuse to be complicit in this situation. We will vacate Gaza.'” This recommendation comes amid increased scrutiny of MSF’s public statements and actions regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Earlier this year, MSF took a critical stance against the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a U.S.- and Israel-supported agency. MSF accused GHF of engaging in systemic violence, prompting outrage from GHF spokespeople, who labeled MSF’s claims as unfounded and damaging.
In a related development, U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik from New York has called for an investigation into MSF under the Anti-Terrorism Act. According to allegations presented in letters obtained by Fox News Digital, MSF’s criticisms of GHF mirror narratives commonly propagated by Hamas. Stefanik voiced concerns that these actions could jeopardize significant humanitarian operations in Gaza.
In his conversation with Fox News Digital, Destexhe noted that MSF repeats claims and statistics from the Gaza Health Ministry, which operates under Hamas governance. This includes early condemnations regarding an explosion in the Al-Ahali Hospital, which subsequent investigations revealed to be caused by a misfired missile from Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Despite these revelations, MSF did not retract its initial response.
“MSF is not being honest; it is exhibiting bias and acting as associates of Hamas,” Destexhe asserted.
In Destexhe’s view, the organization has strayed from its commitment to humanitarian principles in Gaza. He believes that the absence of MSF would not fundamentally alter the humanitarian environment in the region, as he is confident that medical personnel would continue to provide care to those in need without MSF’s presence.
Destexhe reflects on other critical moments in MSF’s history where ethical considerations dictated the organization’s actions. During his tenure, MSF withdrew from the Democratic Republic of the Congo due to human rights concerns, prioritizing ethical integrity over operational engagement. A similar commitment was witnessed during the Rwandan genocide when part of the organization chose to exit to avoid legitimizing ongoing violence.
In late 1994, the French section of MSF withdrew from the camps in Rwanda, while other sections remained. Ultimately, MSF Belgium and MSF Holland were compelled to cease their operations less than a year later as conditions deteriorated and ethics prevailed over presence.
As the debate intensifies regarding MSF’s role, the future of its operations in Gaza remains uncertain. The organization did not respond to a request for comments when contacted by Fox News Digital.
