Federal Court Halts Texas Law Restricting Campus Protests After Dark
A federal judge has issued a temporary injunction against significant portions of Texas’s newly enacted law that restricts expressions on college campuses during nighttime hours. This ruling specifically stops the University of Texas System from enforcing a ban on overnight expressions, as well as restrictions on inviting external speakers and using amplified sound devices in the final two weeks of the academic semester.
U.S. District Judge David A. Ezra made this decision on Tuesday, declaring that the student organizations involved in the lawsuit are likely to prevail on their argument that the law infringes upon their First Amendment rights, which protect their freedom of speech.
