FIRST ON FOX: A group of 30 House Republicans is expressing serious concerns about the ongoing government shutdown and its adverse effects on gun owners across the United States.
Led by Representative Ben Cline of Virginia, the lawmakers addressed a letter to the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, urging the agency to designate specific employees as essential workers. They believe the current classifications are leaving many crucial gun ownership applications in a state of uncertainty.
According to the letter, the lawmakers stated, “As a result of this Democrat-led shutdown, the ATF, like most federal agencies, is operating with a reduced workforce. While Democrats continue to advocate for benefits for illegal immigrants, the constitutional rights of American citizens are being compromised.” This statement was first reported by Fox News Digital.
The letter further elaborated that, “Under federal law, Second Amendment rights cannot be fully exercised without the involvement of the federal government. This is not what the Framers of our Constitution envisioned, yet it reflects the unfortunate reality we face today.”
The government shutdown has now entered its 17th day, with both political parties struggling to reach an agreement on federal funding.
This impasse has resulted in the furlough of thousands of federal employees and the suspension of numerous federal services. Consequently, shutdowns compel federal agencies to prioritize operations, determining which positions are essential and which can be closed temporarily.
Reports indicate that much of the non-law enforcement staff at the ATF has been furloughed, which has slowed the processing of new and renewed civilian federal firearms licenses. In the letter, the lawmakers stated, “As you are aware, National Firearms Act application examiners are among the ATF employees currently furloughed during this shutdown. As a result, Americans cannot acquire popular NFA-regulated firearms and safety equipment, such as short-barreled rifles and silencers, because the ATF is unable to process their applications at this time.”
The House GOP’s message continued by emphasizing, “NFA application approvals relate to the discharge of the President’s constitutional duties and powers. The President of the United States bears the responsibility of protecting the Constitution, which undeniably includes upholding Second Amendment rights.”
Furthermore, the House Republicans argued that this temporary halt in processing could jeopardize public safety and property. They noted that the ATF similarly ceased processing NFA applications during previous government shutdowns.
They warned, “During these periods of indefinite delay, the ATF has deprived Americans of access to regulated firearms. This inability to acquire firearms directly infringes on Americans’ right to protect themselves, their families, and their property.”
The lawmakers urged the acting ATF Director to act responsibly, pointing out, “As Acting ATF Director, you have significant authority to designate which ATF positions can be classified as ‘excepted’ during a lapse in appropriations, aligning with DOJ’s contingency plan, OMB and OPM guidance, and the legal limits on what can continue during a shutdown.”
Fox News Digital reached out for a comment from the ATF but had not received a timely response.
