Former Republican Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron has commended the prosecutor managing the indictment of Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James. The charges against James include bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution. Cameron expressed his approval of the prosecution’s methodical approach in a political landscape where a Republican has not won a presidential election in Virginia for two decades.
Cameron, who currently serves as CEO of the nonprofit organization 1792 Exchange, conveyed his respect for Lindsey Halligan, the prosecutor overseeing the proceedings. During a Tuesday interview with Fox News Digital, Cameron stated, “Lindsey Halligan means business. She has been assigned the critical task of ensuring that no one is above the law in the Eastern District of Virginia, and she is fulfilling that responsibility admirably.”
A grand jury in Virginia indicted James on October 9, based on a criminal referral made to the Department of Justice by Federal Housing Finance Director Bill Pulte. The referral, initiated in April, accused James of falsifying mortgage records to secure loans on more favorable terms.
Halligan, the interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, is tasked with the high-profile case. Nominated by President Donald Trump in September, she previously held roles as special assistant to the president and senior associate staff secretary in the early months of the Trump administration. Her involvement in controversial legal matters has also drawn attention, notably when she represented the former president during the FBI’s Mar-a-Lago raid in 2022.
Halligan’s position as a Trump-nominated prosecutor adds another layer to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the prosecution. Some observers have noted that her recent indictments against both James and former FBI Director James Comey may reflect the intersecting worlds of law and politics.
Cameron emphasized Halligan’s professionalism in pursuing the cases. He pointed out that the indictments resulted from a thorough grand jury process where local Virginia citizens evaluated evidence and deemed it sufficient to proceed. Cameron remarked, “This decision is a testament to the legal diligence exercised by the individuals serving on the grand jury. It is not merely a political action but rather a well-supported legal undertaking.”
Despite Virginia’s recent historical leanings toward Democratic candidates, Cameron noted the significance of a grand jury making decisions independent of political affiliations. He observed, “Virginia is not a bastion of conservatism. The residents, many of whom work in Washington D.C., reflect a diverse political landscape. Yet, a jury of peers determined there was enough evidence to indict Letitia James.” Cameron characterized the facts surrounding the alleged misrepresentations in loan documents as straightforward.
He added that Halligan’s handling of the case is commendable and underscores the principle that laws must apply equally to everyone. “Her efforts to guide the grand jury in understanding the evidence available are crucial in ensuring that accountability prevails in this case,” he stated.
Letitia James is facing serious allegations in connection with the mortgage application for a home she purchased in Norfolk, Virginia, in 2020. Reports suggest James identified the property as her primary residence on mortgage documents. Federal authorities assert this declaration was made to secure better loan terms, contravening state law that mandates the New York attorney general reside in New York.
The prosecutors handling the case claim that James derived approximately $18,933 in illicit gains throughout the loan’s lifespan. While James denies any wrongdoing, she contends that any discrepancies in the forms were unintentional mistakes rather than deceitful actions. Furthermore, James and her Democratic allies firmly believe this indictment represents a political maneuver orchestrated by Trump against his adversaries.
At a recent campaign event for socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, James declared her resolve, asserting, “I will not bow, break, or bend. If you come for me, you must come for all of us. We must stand strong together.” She decried the targeting of political figures through legal mechanisms as problematic and echoed criticisms about the politicization of justice.
Interestingly, Cameron pointed out the behavioral dichotomy displayed by James. He noted that her office has prosecuted similar economic fraud cases at the state level, indicating a hypocrisy in her claims regarding the fairness of the indictment against her. James has targeted individuals for mortgage fraud in her official capacity—suggesting that asserting political bias is disingenuous.
Cameron clarified, “This is not an instance of weaponization. This is about accountability under the law. The Department of Justice, as well as U.S. attorneys nationwide, have a duty to enforce the law, regardless of individual circumstances. I applaud their diligent work in this regard.”
Letitia James made headlines for her past legal actions against Trump during her campaign for New York attorney general in 2018. She campaigned on a platform that emphasized rigorous legal accountability, subsequently initiating numerous lawsuits against Trump and his administration. In 2022, she led a civil fraud lawsuit against Trump, accusing him of inflating the values of his properties to deceive lenders. Although she won the case, an appeals court later overturned a substantial $500 million judgment against him.
James is now potentially facing up to 60 years in prison, with charges split across multiple counts. If convicted, she could also incur significant monetary fines along with forfeitures. These harsh penalties highlight the serious implications of the case as it moves through the judicial system.
Both Cameron and James have articulated strong opinions regarding the enforcement of legal standards, emphasizing the need for fairness. James with her previous statements regarding the inequality demonstrated in financial dealings, and Cameron stressing the importance of the judicial processes that have led to the current indictments. Cameron stated, “There cannot be a separate set of rules for different people.” Both figures find themselves at the intersection of law and politics, embodying the complexities of the current legal landscape.
