A 17-year-old male is facing serious accusations after allegedly committing a fatal hit-and-run that resulted in the deaths of two teenage girls. In addition to these grave charges, he is also implicated in two prior “swatting” incidents that targeted one of the victims’ homes in Cranford, New Jersey, just weeks before the tragic event.
The incident occurred on September 29, when the victims, Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas, both aged 17, were riding an electric bike. Around 5:26 p.m., the suspect reportedly struck them with his vehicle, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office. Tragically, both girls were pronounced dead upon arrival at local hospitals.
The suspect has not been publicly named, as he is not yet charged as an adult.
Brent Bramnick, the attorney representing Niotis’ family, disclosed that the suspect had allegedly carried out two swatting incidents at the Niotis residence. Both occurrences happened between September 1 and 15. Swatting involves falsely reporting a serious emergency, prompting law enforcement to respond as if it were real, often creating dangerous situations.
After the initial alleged swatting incident, Bramnick stated that local police had been informed. However, he noted that he did not possess any information indicating that an official investigation followed.
In the weeks leading up to the fatal accident, the suspect allegedly returned to the Niotis family’s home. Bramnick recounted that police responded to the second swatting incident. When they arrived, the suspect was reportedly parked in front of their residence.
According to Bramnick’s account, Niotis’ mother, Foulla, alerted the police about the suspect’s presence. Officers spoke with the suspect, only to inform Niotis that he would be released back to his father.
Following these incidents, Bramnick shared that the Niotis family is seeking answers regarding the apparent lack of action taken by law enforcement. They have questioned what measures were enacted in light of the reports made about the suspect prior to the tragic incident.
Bramnick expressed the family’s frustration, stating that they had received no information about any investigations that may have been conducted after the police were alerted to the incidents. They want to understand why their warnings seemed to fall on deaf ears.
The suspect, who is from Garwood, New Jersey, is currently facing two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Niotis and Salas. During the crash, he was reportedly driving a 2021 black Jeep Compass.
In a statement to the media, Lauren Farinas, a Public Information Officer for the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, confirmed that the suspect was initially detained for questioning soon after the fatal accident. Following the interrogation, he was released as the investigation continued. It was not until October 1 that authorities arrested him based on approved complaints.
Currently, the suspect remains in custody.
Foulla Niotis has previously criticized local police for their inadequate response to her reports regarding the suspect. She has alleged that the suspect thought he was invulnerable due to having relatives who work in law enforcement.
Niotis expressed her deep dissatisfaction, saying, “They should have done a lot. They didn’t do anything.” Her primary desire is justice for her daughter and her friend. She lamented the failure of the local authorities to act on the allegations made against the suspect.
The Niotis family seeks greater accountability from law enforcement, emphasizing the need for answers regarding the handling of the swatting incidents. Their desire to understand what measures were put in place to protect their daughter and her friend underscores the broader conversation about police response to such reports.
As the case unfolds, the community remains concerned about the implications for public safety and the effectiveness of local law enforcement in responding to reports of threats. The tragic loss of two young lives has instigated demands for a thorough investigation and reassurance that similar incidents will not go unchecked in the future.
In the wake of this devastating event, local authorities are under scrutiny. The Niotis family’s campaign for answers resonates throughout the community as they advocate for justice not only for Maria and Isabella but for all victims of crime.
