A 23-year-old Florida man with a troubling criminal history was apprehended after a two-month manhunt. Jacoby Tillman, facing serious charges including attempted murder and rape, was freed on a $9,500 bond just two days after his arrest.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Tillman attacked a woman from behind early in the morning on July 25. He allegedly choked her until she lost consciousness while she was on the Little Econ Greenway trail.
During a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday morning, Judge Vincent Chiu reviewed the case. Responding to the prosecution’s request, he agreed to revoke Tillman’s bond, paving the way for his transfer back to the Orange County Jail.
Testimonies from Tillman’s girlfriend, whose name remains confidential, revealed alarming details of the assault. She claimed he confessed to her, stating, ‘I didn’t rape the lady. I was trying to kill the lady.’ In another disturbing remark, he allegedly expressed a chilling curiosity, saying, ‘Because I wanted to know what it is like to choke someone out.’ These statements were documented in court records.
Additional allegations emerged from his girlfriend, who claimed that Tillman had previously strangled her. Shockingly, she also detailed how his mother attempted to assist him in evading law enforcement after they saw news coverage of the attack, which included surveillance footage.
The survivor of the assault recounted her harrowing experience. She awoke face down on the trail, disoriented, and discovered her shorts had been removed. Upon regaining her senses, she ran to seek help, encountering several passersby who called 911 and provided her with a spare set of shorts.
Authorities confirmed in a police affidavit that the victim sustained injuries, particularly around her eyes and nose, after the choking incident.
A jogger on the trail later reported observing a man matching Tillman’s description sprinting away from the scene. He described his behavior as suspicious and recounted how he discovered the victim’s belongings, including her phone and car keys, discarded on the ground.
Security footage from the trail allegedly captured Tillman disposing of the victim’s underwear by throwing it over a fence, adding weight to the evidence against him.
The brutal assault sparked safety advisories from law enforcement officials urging women to remain vigilant during outdoor activities. Authorities recommended avoiding noise-canceling headphones and not jogging alone as safety precautions.
The arrested suspect, a shirtless Tillman, was captured on camera making unsettling gestures towards a photographer as deputies escorted him into a patrol vehicle.
Following his release on October 14, Orange County Sheriff John Mina expressed outrage, labeling the situation as ‘atrocious’ in a heartfelt Facebook post.
Court records reveal that Tillman has at least four felony cases dating back to 2021, including serious convictions for robbery and violent battery against a defenseless individual. His record has also seen him convicted of misdemeanor battery as recently as 2023.
In this latest case, he faces severe charges, including first-degree attempted murder, attempted sexual battery with a deadly weapon or physical force, battery by strangulation, and third-degree battery.
This disturbing incident raises serious questions about the justice system’s approach to managing violent offenders. The rapid release of individuals with such extensive criminal backgrounds has sparked public outcry and debate about accountability for judges who allow repeat offenders to re-enter society.
As communities call for greater attention to safety measures and judicial responsibility, the impact of this case will resonate far beyond the courtroom.
