Texas Woman Claims Designer Heels Caused Fatal Crash During Night of Drinking

A Texas woman stands accused of driving under the influence and fatally striking a man during a night of bar-hopping. Kristina Chambers, 34, adopted an unusual defense strategy, blaming her designer shoes for the tragic incident.

The incident occurred in April 2023 when Chambers allegedly collided with Joseph McMullin, 33, outside a Houston Voodoo Doughnut shop while he was on a date. Chambers faces charges of manslaughter related to McMullin’s death, reported by various news outlets.

Night of Excess and Dramatic Consequences

Prosecutors allege that Chambers had been drinking heavily and was four times over the legal alcohol limit when the collision occurred. As the night unfolded, evidence showed that Chambers had consumed a significant amount of alcohol while bar-hopping with friends.

In addition to the impaired driving allegations, authorities discovered small baggies of cocaine both in Chambers’ car and her purse. This evidence came to light during the investigation following the crash.

Unusual Defense Strategy

As Chambers’ trial began recently, her attorney Mark Thiessen proposed a unique explanation for the deadly accident. He argued that her high-end Christian Louboutin heels became stuck on the gas pedal of her luxury Porsche. He suggested this distraction occurred as she navigated one of Houston’s notoriously treacherous curves.

The defense’s narrative prompted significant skepticism from prosecutors. Andrew Figliuzzi, representing the state, countered by stating that Chambers was eager to showcase her sports car while driving under the influence. He painted a picture of reckless behavior that contradicted the defense’s claims.

A Witness’s Harrowing Account

Briana Iturrino, who was with McMullin during the fatal night, provided a riveting account to the jury. She testified that they had just left a restaurant around 2:25 a.m. when she noticed headlights heading directly toward them.

Iturrino described the horrifying moment when Chambers’ Porsche sped past them at what was estimated to be over 70 mph. She noted how she spun around to warn McMullin about the approaching vehicle but realized, tragically, that he had not escaped the crash.

In her emotional testimony, she recounted feeling something strike her hip as the car hurtled past. It turned out to be McMullin being violently thrown into the air as Chambers’ vehicle crashed into a pole. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Iturrino called 911 and attempted to administer CPR until emergency personnel arrived.

McMullin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eyewitness Testimony

Alfredo Ponce, a nearby pool hall manager, also took the stand. He described hearing the crash and rushing outside to help. Upon approaching Chambers’ vehicle, he noted a strong smell of alcohol emanating from it. Ponce’s observations added to the prosecution’s case regarding Chambers’ alleged intoxication.

Despite the overwhelming evidence against her, Chambers pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter charges, asserting her innocence.

Legal Ramifications and Family Response

Chambers faces additional challenges outside of the criminal trial, including a wrongful death lawsuit filed by McMullin’s family. This civil suit seeks $1 million in damages and suggests that Chambers’ ex-husband, hedge fund manager Xuan Si, partly bears responsibility for the incident due to purchasing the luxury sports car shortly before the crash.

Si, in response to the lawsuit, allegedly claimed that Chambers had misappropriated funds from their joint account for the purchase. He has also insisted that, in his perspective, Chambers did not have a drinking problem and had never witnessed her engage in substance abuse.

However, Sebastian Lopez, a friend who was in the vehicle during the crash, painted a different picture. He described Chambers as having alcohol dependence and stated that Si was aware of her substance use. Lopez indicated that Chambers had previously driven under the influence on multiple occasions.

As Chambers’ criminal trial continues, the civil lawsuit is poised to be addressed by a judge in April 2026. The unfolding events highlight a myriad of issues surrounding impaired driving, personal accountability, and the tragic outcomes that can emerge from reckless behavior.
