Maryland Governor Urges Action Over Studies in Reparations for Black Communities

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, the nation’s only Black governor, recently asserted that the era of deliberative studies on reparations has ended. In a conversation with radio host Charlamagne tha God, he insisted that immediate actions are essential to support Black communities.

Moore previously stirred controversy among his own allies by vetoing a reparations bill in May. The vetoed legislation, known as SB 587, aimed to establish the Maryland Reparations Commission. This commission was intended to provide recommendations by 2027 concerning benefits for African Americans affected by slavery and systemic inequality.

The governor’s decision appeared to be interpreted by various Black advocacy groups as a rejection of reparations. During Moore’s interview, Charlamagne directly questioned him about this perception.

Charlamagne commented, “You faced criticism for vetoing a measure to create a commission to study potential reparations in Maryland. However, I believe you had valid reasons that many may not have fully understood.”

In response, Moore asserted, “I am a person of action. I don’t need more studies. We have conducted comprehensive studies over the last two decades which cover similar topics.” He highlighted that one of these studies involved his wife. He raised the question of the necessity for another two-year study on a matter where he believes the conclusion is already evident.

He emphasized that he is committed to addressing these issues directly. “I have been working closely with our caucus and community members on a range of these issues,” Moore explained. “We recently allocated $400 million for our Just Communities initiative, which aims to inject significant capital into areas long impacted by systemic racism and discrimination—problems such as redlining and mass incarceration. We are looking to identify these neighborhoods and begin addressing the historical injustices they have faced.”

Moore also mentioned the increased funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, acknowledging that they have received significantly less support historically. He continues to advocate for initiatives that offer second chances to individuals affected by punitive legal systems, underlining that these efforts disproportionately benefit Black communities.

Additionally, he spoke on topics of procurement reform, which he believes has contributed to the emergence of Black millionaires within Maryland. “My policies are transparent and unapologetically supportive of the Black community,” Moore stated.
