Senator Lindsey Graham Raises Concerns Over FBI Misconduct in Anti-Trump Investigations

For almost a decade, conservatives have contended that federal law enforcement agencies have targeted President Donald Trump and his allies. The mainstream media, along with various intelligence experts, have attempted to portray Hunter Biden’s laptop as mere fiction while upholding the Steele Dossier as indisputable fact. This disparity indicates a profound political bias against Trump that warrants serious scrutiny. Instead of allowing these issues to fade, I aim to set the record straight.

In September, former FBI Director James Comey, notorious for his misuse of authority against Trump, faced indictment for allegedly lying to Congress. I assert that Comey’s actions merit thorough examination, including potential criminal misconduct.

The Prelude to Comey’s Indictment

To understand the prosecution of Comey, it is pivotal to consider the timeline leading to this unprecedented moment. In July 2016, Comey’s FBI initiated Crossfire Hurricane, a counterintelligence investigation focused on whether Trump colluded with Russia during his presidential campaign. This inquiry stemmed primarily from the Steele Dossier, which Christopher Steele prepared at the behest of the Clinton campaign.

Key White House Meetings Under Scrutiny

Shortly after launching Crossfire Hurricane, Comey participated in a significant White House meeting. At this meeting, then-CIA Director John Brennan briefed then-President Barack Obama, then-Vice President Joe Biden, and other senior officials about credible intelligence that suggested Hillary Clinton’s campaign was behind the narrative alleging Trump’s collusion with Russia. Only weeks afterward, Comey received a memo from the intelligence community reinforcing the assertion that the Clinton campaign was involved in propelling this narrative.

As January 2017 approached, a Russian subsource who provided information for the Steele Dossier informed the FBI that the dossier’s contents were unreliable and nothing more than hearsay. Despite this critical revelation, Comey and his associates continued to seek warrants against Carter Page, a former advisor to the Trump campaign.

Missed Opportunities for Accountability

Alarmingly, one would expect that the FBI would react swiftly when the primary source for a critical document used in a FISA court warrant retracted its authenticity. However, this vital information languished within the FBI without reaching Comey. The implications of this oversight are troubling.

At that juncture, the FBI possessed exculpatory evidence that could have cleared Trump. The Department of Justice and the FBI have an obligation to share exculpatory information that undermines the reliability of warrant applications with the FISA court, yet this obligation went unfulfilled.

Inconsistencies in Comey’s Testimony

In 2020, during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing that I chaired, Comey testified that he remained unaware of the dossier’s lack of credibility and claimed the intelligence reports linking the Clinton campaign to the Russia narrative did not register with him. I found it hard to believe Comey was being truthful then and still do.

Another pivotal issue is the Biden Justice Department’s aggressive approach towards Trump. Just three days after announcing his candidacy for the 2024 presidency, the Biden DOJ appointed Jack Smith as special counsel.

Political Motivations Behind Indictments

In a matter of months, Trump faced indictment on 91 criminal charges across four different jurisdictions, with two of those cases initiated by Smith. Many Americans share my belief that if Trump had chosen not to run for the presidency in 2024, none of these charges would have surfaced. Such actions appear politically motivated, and Smith has not demonstrated impartiality amidst this investigation.

Department of Justice Policy Under Fire

Historically, the DOJ refrains from charging political candidates before elections to avoid any semblance of impropriety. Yet, Smith flouted this principle. Remarkably, within a month of the upcoming 2024 election, Smith released a brief detailing his interpretation of the evidence against Trump, alongside an unredacted version two weeks before the election.

Impact of Investigations on Constitutional Principles

Smith’s actions did not stop at targeting Trump; he also sought information on numerous congressional allies. Investigators obtained phone records from me and eight of my colleagues during the pivotal days of January 4 to 7, 2021. At that time, I was serving as the Senate Judiciary Committee’s chairman. Such tactics represent a serious breach of the Constitution’s separation of powers, warranting concern from all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.

Both Comey and Smith share a troubling pattern of circumventing established protocols in their pursuit of Trump. Comey dismissed critical evidence exonerating Trump during Crossfire Hurricane, while Smith disseminated damaging information shortly before the election—a move that raised eyebrows nationwide.

Public Response to Department of Justice Misconduct

Fortunately, many Americans have recognized and reacted to these blatant attempts to weaponize the DOJ and FBI against Trump and his supporters. Despite their efforts, Comey, Smith, and others have inflicted lasting damage on our nation. This misconduct has eroded trust in our institutions and undermined the Constitution’s essential principle of equal justice for all.

These incidents are not anomalies; they align with a broader pattern of Democratic administrations targeting conservatives. From the Republican National Committee to concerned parents at school board meetings, it becomes increasingly clear why many Republicans feel the law is being wielded against them. To deny this would disregard reality.

Moving Forward with Resolve

I stand with my Republican colleagues and fellow Americans in resisting intimidation. We will continue to advocate for accountability regarding those responsible for egregious abuses of power. Our determination to expose such misconduct reflects our commitment to preserving democratic principles and the rule of law.
