Nonetheless, during the game against the Browns, Tagovailoa targeted Waddle only four times, leading to a disappointing performance where Waddle caught just one pass for 15 yards.
This game marks a significant reduction in Waddle’s targets, a scenario he hasn’t experienced since Week 14 of the previous season against the Houston Texans, when he also had a minimal impact on the game due to a knee injury.
Throughout the match, Tagovailoa faced significant pressure as the Browns’ defense applied relentless pressure. The Dolphins’ offense struggled, resulting in three interceptions and Tagovailoa completing only 12 passes for a mere 100 yards.
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel had previously touted the connection and chemistry between Tagovailoa and his teammates. However, this season has proven to be a challenge for the team in maintaining that synergy. Following the game, McDaniel stated that he and Tagovailoa had a productive meeting, lasting an hour and a half, the day before the game.
McDaniel emphasized his trust in Tagovailoa, stating, “I think there’s zero uncertainty with Tua on my conviction in him and my belief in him. We’re both very eager to do better at our jobs, and we’re both very committed and trusting of each other to respond to what is necessary for the team to do better.”
Despite the challenges he’s faced this season, Tagovailoa leads the NFL in interceptions, with 10 under his belt compared to 11 touchdown passes. He has thrown for a total of 1,313 yards with a respectable completion rate of 67.8%.
As the season progresses, the Dolphins need to address their offensive struggles, particularly in maximizing the potential of players like Waddle. Enhancing communication and strategy on the field may be essential to turn their fortunes around.
