The Turning Point USA chapter at Illinois State University recently faced a significant disturbance when a teaching assistant flipped their table twice, leading to their dismissal. This incident captured considerable attention, and the teaching assistant has since forfeited their position at the university.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, TPUSA Illinois State University vice president Matt Saner expressed disbelief over the events. He noted that no one had ever gone to such lengths as to flip their table, let alone do it on two occasions.
Saner and chapter president Ben Umbdenstock extensively detailed the incident, sharing their experiences and thoughts about the actions taken against them. Umbdenstock described the first table flipping on October 13 as something straight out of a cinematic movie that escalated unexpectedly.
As the confrontation developed, the teaching assistant, identified as Derek Lopez, escalated the situation by invoking the Constitution. He asserted that what TPUSA represented was fascism, before picking up the table and flipping it over. Umbdenstock recounted the moment in shock, saying, “It was crazy. And he just flips it, and I’m like, Whoa.” This chaotic incident shocked the members present, who struggled to comprehend what had just transpired.
Afterward, Umbdenstock faced questions about why they did not retaliate. He firmly stated his position, explaining that engaging in a physical confrontation was not his approach. He made it clear that he did not intend to stoop to such levels.
In the wake of the initial confrontation, the incident was reported to university officials. The following Wednesday, the TPUSA chapter attempted to resume their activities with another table set up on campus. However, tensions escalated again when Lopez confronted them. He had previously criticized the group for inviting conservative comedian Alex Stein to speak on campus.
Matt Saner, wary of another potential confrontation, recounted the events leading up to the second table flipping. He strategically positioned himself between Lopez and the table, anticipating further disruption. Unfortunately, Lopez attempted to flip the table again, employing startling assertions in the process.
During the altercation, Lopez voiced a statement about Jesus purportedly having endorsed such behavior, which shocked Saner. Saner later described how he instinctively reacted to prevent Lopez from flipping the table. “He tried to flip it again, but I used every bone in my body to keep it upright,” Saner remarked. The confrontation escalated further when Lopez damaged promotional materials from TPUSA, illustrating his disdain towards the organization.
In light of these events, university officials responded swiftly. The university issued a statement confirming that Lopez was relieved of his duties as a graduate teaching assistant while further investigation into his actions is conducted. This move underscores the administration’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful campus environment.
Lopez’s actions did not go unnoticed by law enforcement, as he faced charges for disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. The ongoing investigation may even lead to additional charges, further emphasizing the seriousness of the incident.
The university reiterated its dedication to fostering a campus environment where diverse perspectives are recognized. University officials stressed the importance of civility and mutual respect among all members of the campus community during exchanges of differing opinions.
Police Chief Aaron Woodruff commended the efforts to protect the First Amendment rights of all individuals on campus. He encouraged students and faculty to familiarize themselves with their rights and responsibilities regarding free speech, promoting constructive dialogue in the face of disagreement.
Reflecting on prior experiences, Matt Saner mentioned that there had been previous instances where conservative students felt uncomfortable due to the teaching assistant’s demeanor. He noted how the assistant had previously grimaced at students wearing conservative attire, raising concerns about a biased atmosphere in classroom discussions.
Members of the TPUSA chapter remain resolute in their commitment to activism and discussion, insisting that this incident will not deter their efforts. Saner expressed gratitude for the positive response from university authorities, emphasizing that he felt supported in his pursuit of conservative viewpoints on campus.
The TPUSA members are determined not to let these confrontations intimidate them. They view this incident as a testament to the complexities of free speech on campuses today, highlighting the need for ongoing discussions about integrity and resilience in the face of adversity.
While Derek Lopez did not respond to requests for comment, the unfolding events at Illinois State University serve as a critical reminder of the challenges associated with campus engagement in politically charged environments. As dialogues surrounding free speech continue, the actions taken by the university showcase a proactive approach to managing these difficult situations while protecting the rights of all students.
