As President Donald Trump embarks on a diplomatic mission across the Arab world, discussions surrounding peace in the Middle East continue to surface. However, this conversation remains immensely complicated by the presence of the Hamas terrorist organization.
As a former U.S. Navy lieutenant commander and co-founder of the Muslim Reform Movement, I contend that true victory in the Middle East can only be achieved through the total and unconditional surrender of Hamas and the Palestinian people.
The assertive approach that Trump has employed in trade negotiations with China offers insights into how he must tackle the situation in the Middle East to successfully defeat Hamas. During his 2016 campaign, Trump envisioned a new era of possibilities for peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Skeptics doubted the feasibility of a sustained peace agreement, yet Trump defied expectations by facilitating the Abraham Accords in 2019. This pivotal agreement paved the way for improved relations between Israel and four historic adversaries: the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Sudan, and Bahrain.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas ignited a brutal conflict marked by unspeakable violence, including acts of rape and murder against the Jewish community, reminiscent of the darkest days of the Holocaust.
Hamas has not hesitated to celebrate and disseminate videos of their atrocities. Their deep-rooted hatred for Jews and Israel embodies a theo-political ideology known as Islamism, which seeks to establish a theocratic state devoid of individual freedoms and free enterprise. This ideology has historical ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and has permeated the beliefs of many Muslims worldwide.
Repeated conflict between Arab nations and Palestinian militant groups against Israel has resulted in consistent failures. From 1948 to 2023, each attempt to wage war has led to significant losses.
The persistent cycle of these conflicts arises from a critical factor: the international community has never compelled the Palestinians to recognize their defeat. Presently, Hamas operates as a death cult, masquerading as victims while using international funds to construct elaborate tunnels designed for warfare.
Muslims globally, alongside guilt-ridden individuals from the West, often overlook a vital aspect of redemption—surrender. Just as Allied forces necessitated the unconditional surrender of Germany and Japan after World War II, a similar stance is essential today for the Palestinian territories to transition towards modernity.
Despite numerous defeats, the Palestinians have yet to admit the failures associated with their radical ideologies. Some within the Muslim community may voice reluctance towards surrendering to the Jews; however, such a decision is not an act of submission to a nationality but rather a rejection of the inhumane practices of Islamist ideologies that strive for the annihilation of Israel.
The Palestinian establishment has brainwashed its populace, mirroring the propaganda tactics of Nazi Germany. When forced to accept their defeat, Germans found an unexpected path to freedom and reconstruction.
This moral courage is what is required today. The Hamas Charter represents a manifesto filled with hatred towards Jews, akin to a Palestinian Mein Kampf. Its tenets undermine any hope for future generations.
I uphold my belief in Islam but reject the extremist version known as Islamism. Historically, Islamic civilization was a beacon of knowledge, giving rise to advancements in mathematics, science, and philosophy.
Remarkably, the only nation-state referenced in the Qur’an is Israel, serving as an implicit acknowledgment that cannot be ignored even by die-hard Islamists.
The burgeoning alliance among Arab nations should encompass more than just conspicuous skyscrapers and economic cooperation; it must prioritize transformative change. If not, it risks devolving into a scenario reminiscent of Qatar—a nation characterized by modern infrastructure yet plagued by extremist ideologies propagated through media outlets like Al-Jazeera.
Al-Jazeera has garnered notoriety for radicalizing viewers, magnifying Islamist propaganda, and aligning with terrorist organizations. This extensive platform of hate epitomizes the challenges Arab nations face in advancing towards a more progressive future.
The internet is reshaping lives, including within Muslim communities, revealing the challenges posed by grievance and tribalism. The Arab Awakening of 2011 showcased the collective strength of the Arab populace, empowering them to confront oppressive regimes.
A recent survey revealed that 81% of Muslims in the United Kingdom identify themselves primarily as Muslim rather than British. Another alarming global poll indicated substantial support for capital punishment among respondents for those deemed apostates of Islam. This interpretation highlights an ideological crisis that must be addressed if change is to take root.
During a recent debate at the Oxford Union, I articulated that the contemporary brand of Islam appears incompatible with the ideals of democracy and freedom. Yet, I firmly believe that a modern, pluralistic interpretation of Islam is attainable. However, it requires abandoning the entrenched prejudices associated with the current narratives.
Islamic societies have demonstrated their capacity for success within diverse frameworks. By fostering dialogue through the Muslim Reform Movement and the Clarity Coalition, we advocate for a shift away from hatred towards a commitment to modernity.
This entails recognizing Israel as a legitimate state and bringing hostilities against it to an unconditional close. The delusions surrounding a Palestine supplanting Israel must be dispelled for the sake of future generations.
History illustrates that unconditional surrender can pave the way for healing and renewal for populations trapped in cycles of violence. The current situation in Gaza, alongside recent anti-Hamas protests, may represent a turning point. If the international community can facilitate their surrender, it may encourage a broader awakening.
Ending the vicious cycle of conflict will not only liberate the Palestinians from the grips of Hamas but also enable their entry into the 21st century, free from the shackles of extremist ideologies.
