On October 7, 2023, residents of Rehovot, Israel, awoke to the alarming sound of sirens piercing the morning air. This city, located a mere 15 miles from Tel Aviv, faced an unprecedented threat as thousands of rockets were launched toward Israel. Within hours, chilling reports arose regarding a Hamas-led incursion into nearby communities, accompanied by horrifying live-streamed footage revealing the chaos and violence unleashed by the attackers.
In the midst of this turmoil, my son, Nimrod Cohen, a 19-year-old soldier serving as a tank gunner in the Israel Defense Forces near Gaza, became a priority in my thoughts. Our family endured hours of anxious silence without any communication from him. In a desperate bid for answers, I turned to social media and discovered a chilling video on YouTube. In it, Hamas terrorists were seen surrounding a burning tank, with scathing evidence of their brutality as they dragged Nimrod away. The stark image remains etched in my mind.
On that harrowing day, 1,200 individuals became victims of unspeakable acts, with 247 hostages taken by Hamas. Tragically, Nimrod, now 20, remains one of the 59 hostages still imprisoned in Gaza. Numerous families share our anguish, longing for their loved ones as the situation unfolds.
As more details emerged, we learned that Nimrod was the sole survivor of the attack on his tank, which claimed the lives of his comrades, Cpt. Omer Neutra, Sgt. Shaked Dahan, and Sgt. Oz Daniel. Their sacrifice weighs heavily on our hearts, as the uncertainty surrounding Nimrod’s fate continues to take its toll, both emotionally and mentally.
For the past 18 months, my family has traversed the globe, tirelessly raising awareness about Nimrod’s plight and the ordeal endured by other hostages in the labyrinth of Hamas tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip. Sadly, statistics reveal the grim reality: 41 hostages have died under captivity, seven were rescued through military operations, and 147 were released during a ceasefire agreement. While compromising with terrorists evokes profound distress, our family is ready to make painful sacrifices for the sake of our son’s freedom.
Thanks to the impactful advocacy of President Donald Trump and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, a ceasefire arrangement was achieved earlier this year. This crucial deal permitted the release of some hostages, including two who confirmed that Nimrod remains alive. Nonetheless, we received deeply troubling accounts of his condition. Reports indicate that he has been shackled, subjected to torture, and confined in a cage. As a result, his mental state has deteriorated, and he suffers from untreated medical issues, including a skin ailment and an ear infection.
Despite these dire circumstances, a glimmer of hope emerged when Nimrod conveyed a message through those who were released. He reassured his family, stating, “I’m okay. Don’t worry about me. I love you.” This heartfelt declaration resonates deeply amidst the despair.
Within the Jewish tradition, individuals are perceived as unique universes unto themselves. This principle remains a cornerstone of the Israeli ethos, underscoring the critical importance of ensuring that no one is left behind in times of crisis. Therefore, when the ceasefire agreement faltered and hostilities resumed last month, our family’s hearts shattered anew, aware that Nimrod’s life now hangs in the balance, subject to the unpredictable course of conflict.
The United States has historically occupied a position as the leader of the free world. Therefore, I make this impassioned plea for the Trump administration to sustain its diplomatic efforts, leveraging pressure on all involved parties. This measure is not just for our family, but for the wider Israeli society and all individuals who cherish liberty, striving to recover from the trauma inflicted by this relentless war.
During Nimrod’s teenage years, he visited the renowned Madame Tussauds wax museum in London. In a poignant memory, we captured a photo of him standing next to the lifelike figure of President Trump. I hold onto the hope that one day soon, I will again capture a photograph of my beloved son with the very leader who possesses the power to alleviate his suffering and end this devastating conflict.
In these challenging times, we must recognize the complexity surrounding hostage situations in international conflicts. Countries face deep moral quandaries when addressing the release of hostages while balancing national security interests. Yet, the safety and well-being of innocent individuals must remain paramount.
Moreover, it becomes increasingly vital for leaders to engage in sustained dialogues aimed at fostering peace and stability. The plight of hostages like Nimrod should serve as a common ground urging both sides to explore avenues that prevent further suffering. We implore responsible leaders to remain committed to decisive actions that prioritize human life and dignity.
Global communities have an essential role in advocating for hostages caught in conflict zones. With social media’s reach, raising awareness and put pressure on policymakers can create a significant impact. Collective voices can amplify pleas for help, reminding leaders that each lost life represents a systemic failure of empathy in the international arena.
Through continued advocacy, we can effectively break the cycle of violence that grips communities around the world. Individuals, families, and communities need to fuse their efforts to educate others about the importance of humanitarian action in conflict settings.
