A Historical Crossroads — UC Berkeley Faces Censorship in the Name of Free Speech

Dr. Frank Turek, a prominent advocate for Christianity and author, recently shared insights with Fox News Digital ahead of his participation in the final leg of the Turning Point USA tour entitled “This Is The Turning Point,” held at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Turek has authored several influential books, including the well-known title “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist.” He serves as the president of CrossExamined.org and actively travels across America, delivering compelling evidence for Christianity at various venues including churches, high schools, and secular college campuses.

In early 2020, Charlie Kirk reached out to Dr. Turek for guidance on effectively engaging students regarding matters of faith and evidence. Turek reflected on their relationship, stating that Kirk admired his work and wanted to improve his ability to present Christian arguments. They quickly became friends and collaborators.

Preparing for the Tour

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Turek noted that he devoted significant time to helping Kirk prepare for Turning Point USA’s tour. This tour, originally branded as “The American Comeback,” was tragically rebranded following the assassination of Kirk in September.

Turek expressed a strong desire to attend the UC Berkeley event specifically. He believes that the university’s progressive environment presents an opportunity to provide rational discourse regarding Christianity.

Free Speech at Berkeley: A Distant Memory?

Turek lamented the stark contrast between the university’s historical commitment to free speech and its current climate. He pointed out that posters plastered around the campus referenced the upcoming event with slogans like “Fascists, Zionists, Out!”

He emphasized that Berkeley played a pivotal role in championing free speech in the 1960s, an era when students fought against the suppression of divergent views. Now, according to Turek, the university’s atmosphere has shifted towards silencing those with opposing opinions.

The irony is not lost on him. He asserts that many who espouse values of inclusion, tolerance, and diversity are paradoxically intolerant of differing viewpoints.

Official Response from Berkeley

In response to recent activities and claims against the campus environment, Dan Mogulof, Berkeley’s Assistant Vice Chancellor, clarified to Fox News Digital that the posters linked to the event were created by an external organization unaffiliated with the university. He affirmed the institution’s commitment to allowing student groups to invite guests for events, asserting that safety measures would be taken in collaboration with campus police to ensure a secure environment for all attendees.

Relying on Evidence Over Slogans

Turek urged a shift away from the reliance on slogans in discussions and debates. He criticized those labeling Turning Point USA as fascist, highlighting the group’s commitment to fostering dialogue and engagement at their events. He asserted that true fascism seeks to silence dissent, whereas Kirk and his organization encourage open conversations.

Turek articulated that it’s often conservatives who wish to engage in constructive dialogue, while it appears that many on the left seek to suppress debate. He stressed the importance of maintaining an environment where questions can be raised and answered, enabling everyone to learn and grow in understanding.

The Call for Boldness

With a focus on encouragement, Turek urged Christians to remain bold in their beliefs and to stand firm in their values. He emphasized the significance of political engagement in an increasingly complex landscape and highlighted the impact of laws governing free speech and religious expression.

As Turek put it, individuals must do what they believe is right while leaving the outcomes to a higher power. His message serves as a rallying cry for those concerned about the erosion of free speech and the values of faith in today’s society.
