Changes are sweeping across America. For four years, citizens witnessed the Biden administration deflecting blame for the crises it created, including a historic border crisis. While officials in Washington tried to present an illusion of security at the border, the reality exposed a different narrative.
I represent Texas’ 23rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. My district, stretching 823 miles from San Antonio to El Paso, encompasses some of the hardest-hit border communities including Eagle Pass and Del Rio. These areas, particularly vulnerable to surges of illegal immigration, have faced overwhelming challenges.
At the beginning of President Joe Biden’s term, I extended my hand in goodwill, seeking collaboration to secure our borders. My goal was to build an immigration system that is orderly, respects the law, and prioritizes the interests of the American people.
Unfortunately, my hopes were met with resistance. Every proposed solution faced bureaucratic hurdles, reflecting a lack of genuine interest from those in the West Wing to address these pressing issues. Shortly after my discussions with the previous administration, the consequences of the Biden administration’s approach became evident.
In 2021, a significant influx of Haitian migrants overwhelmed Del Rio, a community of just 35,000 residents. Resources rapidly dwindled as these migrants were forced into makeshift camps, left to wait for days. The increase in illegal crossings in Eagle Pass and El Paso peaked in 2023, pushing these communities past their limits. Essential services, including pedestrian bridges and rail crossings, suspended operations as border agents had to manage the influx of people unlawfully entering the country.
Amidst this turmoil, federal authorities shifted their gaze towards larger cities with sanctuary policies, leaving border communities to grapple with their crises alone. After enduring four years of policies that shattered the fabric of our immigration system, the American public can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Upon taking office, President Donald Trump swiftly implemented executive actions addressing the priorities I have long advocated in Congress. The resurgence of deadly cartels and transnational gangs, such as MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, prompted the administration to classify them as foreign terrorist organizations. The reinstatement of the successful Remain in Mexico policy began to take effect, contributing to increased enforcement against illegal entry.
Deportation flights, many originating from Biggs Army Airfield at Fort Bliss in El Paso, have successfully transported illegal immigrants back to their home countries. Recently, I visited the base to meet with military leaders and Border Patrol agents, and it was clear that they are ready for the challenges ahead. With the military deployed along the southern border, resources are being mobilized to restore order and address the current crisis.
Local, state, and federal officials are now united in their commitment to restoring safety in America. The revamped administration has shifted focus towards supporting law enforcement rather than undermining their efforts to enforce immigration laws. By prioritizing the needs of the majority of citizens, we can finally witness positive changes in border management.
As we strive to reverse the detrimental impacts of open border policies, it is crucial not to overlook the root causes of our immigration challenges. With a leadership that champions patriotism and the rule of law, now is the time to make necessary changes to our immigration framework that uphold our founding principles.
The same American exceptionalism that once propelled humanity to the moon can lead us forward to unprecedented heights. This enduring spirit has cultivated a nation where the brightest minds ignite progress and proudly contribute to our collective identity. By establishing a system grounded in law and order, we can ensure that the American dream remains accessible to those who earn it, embrace our values, and contribute to our society.
Ultimately, this revamped approach promises a secure, safe, and prosperous future for America.
