Adam Devine, renowned for his role in the popular series Modern Family, has been living with ongoing chronic pain following a life-altering accident when he was just 11 years old. In a revealing podcast interview, he opened up about the challenges he has faced since a cement truck struck him.
During an episode of the podcast In Depth With Graham Bensinger, which airs on YouTube, the 41-year-old actor recounted the terrifying details of the accident that left a lasting impact on his physical health. Devine noted that the past few years have been particularly difficult, filled with pain that he described as making life feel like a nightmare.
Devine shared that he experiences frequent muscle spasms, stating it hurts to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods. This constant discomfort has significantly diminished his quality of life.
Medical professionals have struggled to pinpoint the root of his pain. Devine expressed frustration that doctors do not fully understand the issue, but they have presented him with alarming worst-case scenarios. In a shocking revelation, he shared that just within the last year, doctors told him he was dying.
They diagnosed him with a rare condition known as stiff-person syndrome, a neurological disorder characterized by severe muscle stiffness and spasms. As Devine articulated, this syndrome’s implications are grave, as it can lead to the body becoming so rigid that essential functions, including heartbeats, cease.
With an average life expectancy of six years for those diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, Devine felt a sense of dread, especially since he received this diagnosis just a month before the birth of his son, Beau, with actress Chloe Bridges. He recalled feeling a mix of emotions, saying, “Oh great, now I’m gonna die.”
As time progressed and his symptoms did not improve, Devine found himself limited to walking only a few blocks before succumbing to discomfort. Following up with a leading expert in the field, he was relieved to learn that he does not have the disorder after all. Instead, the expert attributed his symptoms to the childhood accident.
Devine underwent extensive treatments, including stem cell therapy, which has brought him some relief. He acknowledged that he is now feeling better than he has in years. The healing journey has been long and arduous.
Reflecting on his childhood trauma, Devine previously recounted the harrowing details of being struck by a cement truck. He and his friends had just left a store with plans to indulge in some candy and mischief. However, a miscommunication led to a catastrophic outcome.
As he explained, one of his friends called out to him in excitement, but Devine misinterpreted the message, believing it was safe to cross the street. The truck hit him, and as he described, the bicycle he was riding absorbed much of the impact, allowing him to survive the ordeal.
Following the accident, Devine underwent an astonishing 25 surgeries over two years, enduring a grueling recovery process that left him with limited mobility. During this period, he channeled his energy into creativity, writing jokes and sketches from his wheelchair.
In past interviews, Devine reflected on the accident positively, suggesting it shaped his character and strengthened his resolve. He poignantly stated that while many comedians draw inspiration from traumatic experiences, his journey was one of resilience after surviving a serious incident.
Devine’s humorous perspective on his challenges is notable. He noted that instead of allowing his accident to defeat him, he embraced it as a driving force in his life. While he faced adversity, his father’s support during his recovery helped him to cope with the situation.
Many comedians share stories of tough childhoods; however, Devine’s experience underscores the unique paths individuals take toward their ambitions. He humorously remarked that, compared to tragedies faced by others, his story is relatively mild. After all, he simply had a run-in with a cement truck.
Through his openness about his health struggles, Adam Devine sheds light on the experiences of those living with chronic pain and rare medical conditions. His journey highlights the importance of finding hope and strength in difficult circumstances. As he continues to navigate his recovery, he serves as an inspiration for many, reminding them that resilience often arises from the toughest battles.
Devine’s experiences not only reveal the physical challenges he faces but also the emotional strength required to overcome them. While the road to recovery remains complicated, his story stands as a testament to the power of determination and spirit in the face of adversity.
