In a tragic incident in Pinson, Alabama, a man bravely intervened during a shooting, enduring ten gunshot wounds while attempting to protect his friends from a gunman. This attack resulted in the death of 18-year-old Kimber Mills, a senior cheerleader known for her vibrant spirit.
The shooting occurred early Sunday morning at a bonfire gathering in a densely wooded area commonly referred to as The Pit. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect, 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead, arrived at approximately 12:24 a.m. and opened fire following a confrontation that included both verbal and physical altercations.
Prosecutors have charged Whitehead with three counts of attempted murder. He is currently being held on a $180,000 bond, awaiting further court proceedings.
Kimber Mills succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday night, as revealed by her sister, Ashley Mills, through a heartfelt post on social media. Kimber was a dedicated student at Cleveland High School, where she excelled in track and cheerleading.
Ashley Mills wrote, “Our sweet baby sister went to be with the Lord at 7:08 p.m. last night! She has had the biggest gathering for honor walk the doc has ever seen! She was and is so loved by so many. We will miss you Kimber! Everyone is free to share this post anywhere they feel necessary!” She expressed the family’s devastation over Kimber’s passing.
“Kimber was caught in the crossfire,” Ashley tragically stated.
Silas McCay, a 21-year-old witness and friend of Kimber, provided details to local news about his harrowing experience during the incident. He was also shot multiple times, including injuries to his leg, hip, ribcage, stomach, finger, pelvis, and thigh. Despite the severity of his injuries, McCay is expected to recover and may leave the hospital as soon as Friday.
Describing Kimber as a little sister, McCay conveyed his regret about the incident, saying, “I tried everything I could. I wish there was more I could’ve done.” He recalled the moments leading up to the shooting, mentioning that the suspect attempted to speak to Kimber before physical altercations broke out.
McCay explained that his ex-girlfriend informed him of the situation, prompting him and a friend to confront Whitehead. During the confrontation, McCay attempted to subdue the suspect, but as he was pulled away, Whitehead produced a firearm and began shooting.
The chaos of that night left many traumatized and the local community in shock.
Despite his hospitalization, McCay made efforts to visit Kimber, finding solace in their bond. “She was telling me she loved me by squeezing my hand,” he reflected.
Kimber had aspirations to attend the University of Alabama in 2026, where she hoped to pursue a career in nursing. Her dreams, however, faced a heartbreaking end due to the senseless violence that night.
The family’s tragic ordeal continued as they navigated Kimber’s severe injuries. Ashley Mills reported that an honor walk for her sister took place on Tuesday afternoon, highlighting the family’s deep sense of loss.
“She has had too much trauma to her brain,” Ashley shared. “She is breathing on her own with an assisted breathing machine… We do have her on a DNR because we don’t want to hurt her anymore trying to bring her back. We’ve already got it set up for her to be an organ donor because that’s what she wanted.”
Trussville Police Chief Eric Rush confirmed that Kimber sustained critical injuries during the attack, requiring her transport to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for emergency care. The incident has left friends and family searching for ways to cope with the loss.
Rylie Cirbo, a friend who knew Kimber, expressed a sentiment shared by many who grieve her loss, saying, “I’d much rather her be known for her sunshine personality and big smile rather than the tragedy.” Cirbo added that Kimber was a bright light in the lives of many, conveying her gratitude for the joy Kimber brought to those around her.
The impact of this violent incident reverberates throughout the community, sparking discussions about safety and the prevention of gun violence at social gatherings. As investigations continue, many hope for justice in the name of Kimber Mills and her legacy.
Her family and friends are left with memories of a remarkable young woman whose potential was tragically cut short. As they remember Kimber Mills, they will hold on to the love and light she brought into their lives.
