New revelations have come to light regarding the suspects charged in the attempted murder of two ICE agents and a police officer during a violent incident at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, on Independence Day. According to court records, the assailants not only planned the attack but also potentially communicated through an online chat group on Signal.
A criminal complaint filed on July 7 by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas states that the attackers fired 20 to 30 rounds from an AR-15-style rifle before it jammed, significantly escalating the situation.
Investigators have been working diligently to establish how the individuals involved are connected, including examining the Signal group chat. Charges have been filed against ten individuals, including multiple counts of attempted murder of federal agents and three counts relating to the discharge of a firearm during a violent crime.
In addition to these ten suspects, an eleventh individual, Daniel Rolando Sanchez Estrada, has been indicted for concealing evidence related to the attack.
On the night of the attack, a heavily armed group used fireworks to lure two unarmed ICE agents into a parking lot. They vandalized the agents’ personal vehicles, spray-painting the words “traitor” and “Ice Pig,” which the agents were able to monitor through surveillance cameras.
While this was happening, a police officer responded to a 911 call about shots fired from a nearby tree line. Tragically, the officer was struck in the neck, prompting the agents to seek cover. Thankfully, the officer is expected to recover, according to information provided by the Department of Homeland Security.
One of the suspects, Bradford Morris, was apprehended while attempting to flee the scene in a red Hyundai van. During questioning, he informed an FBI agent that he had been involved in the Signal group for some time, having been invited after attending a protest years earlier. Morris had driven to the site with another suspect and two individuals known only by their nicknames, “Champagne and Rowan.” Authorities discovered a revolver, two AR-15 rifles, two Kevlar vests, a ballistic helmet, and a loaded magazine in Morris’ vehicle.
The criminal complaint notes that Morris admitted to bringing some of the suspects from Dallas to the center, supposedly to create disturbances.
Elsewhere, police discovered seven other suspects clad in black military fatigues approximately 300 yards away from the incident. Many were attempting to evade capture, hidden in mud, and were also carrying weapons, vests, and radios.
Experts are beginning to speculate about the broader implications of these attacks. Criminologist Alex Del Carmen expressed concern that a potential nationwide initiative against first responders might be underway. He noted, however, that it could also be a series of isolated incidents inspired by recent events in other jurisdictions.
Evidence presented in court documents indicated significant premeditation for the assault. Investigators discovered anti-government literature in an apartment linked to one of the suspects, including materials entitled “Organising for Attack! Insurrectionary Anarchy.”
Additionally, the term “insurrectionary anarchy” is recognized as a violent extremist ideology involving a commitment to violent uprising against the state.
Another suspect reportedly possessed flyers advocating for violent resistance against ICE, with slogans such as “Fight ICE terror with class war!” and calls to “Free all political prisoners.” Such literature indicates a concerning trend of targeting law enforcement and government agencies.
In light of these events, the Department of Homeland Security has underscored the seriousness of the attack. A spokesperson stated that ICE is collaborating closely with the FBI and the Texas Rangers to address the incident’s ramifications.
The spokesperson reiterated a firm stance against violence, stating that threats or acts of aggression towards law enforcement will not be tolerated. They added that the Secretary has pledged to track down anyone who threatens or harms an officer and bring them to justice.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the growing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and the sometimes violent responses they provoke. As investigations proceed, authorities are likely to uncover more about the connections between the suspects and the plans they had in place.
While the immediate threat may have subsided with the arrests, the potential for similar incidents remains a cause for concern. As the national discourse surrounding immigration continues, so too does the need for law enforcement to remain vigilant against evolving threats.
