Albanian Immigration Advocate Raises Alarm Over Zohran Mamdani’s Primary Win in New York City

Peter Lumaj, an immigration attorney and former U.S. Senate candidate, escaped from communist Albania decades ago to seek freedom and opportunity in America. With the recent victory of Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral primary, Lumaj now expresses concern that the radical ideas promoted by Mamdani could potentially steer the United States toward a troubling path.

“I have seen that movie before, and I do not like the ending of it,” Lumaj stated during an appearance on Fox & Friends First.

Lumaj leveled serious accusations against Mamdani, asserting, “This individual openly advocates for communist values in our country. Such ideas contradict the foundational principles of this nation. His calls for command and control over the economy, coupled with forced property redistribution, echo historical failures witnessed in Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, Venezuela, and Cuba.”

The Warning from History

Lumaj’s sober warning emphasizes the dangers of far-left ideologies. He implores Americans to be vigilant against the spread of such ideas, which he claims are fundamentally un-American.

In 2021, Mamdani addressed the Young Democratic Socialists of America winter conference, urging attendees to remain committed to ambitious goals such as “seizing the means of production.” During the conference, Mamdani indicated that issues like student debt cancellation and Medicare for all have substantial support across the country.

“Currently, discussions surrounding student debt cancellation and Medicare for all resonate with many people in this nation,” Mamdani noted in a recorded message to conference attendees. However, he also recognized that support varies for other goals like Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions and the ultimate aim of seizing production resources.

Memories of Oppression

Lumaj reflected on Mamdani’s rhetoric, specifically the phrase “seizing the means of production,” which he finds reminiscent of Albania’s oppressive past under socialist rule. He warned, “Socialism cannot exist without the government’s use of brute force.”

He elaborated that to enforce policies related to production seizing, the government inevitably resorts to coercive measures. In Albania’s case, the communist takeover involved extensive government action, including dispossessing individuals of their property, detaining, torturing, and even killing dissenters. Lumaj recounted the tragic fate of his father, who lost his life for resisting the communist regime’s demands.

Political Reactions

The political landscape has become more tumultuous since Mamdani’s unexpected primary triumph over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Former President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Mamdani, labeling the AOC-endorsed progressive as a “100% Communist Lunatic” in a post on Truth Social.

Trump has reiterated his sentiments in various communications. When Mamdani was asked by NBC’s Kristen Welker if he identifies as a communist, he firmly denied the claim. “No, I am not a communist,” he stated emphatically.

In response to the criticism, Mamdani underscored the importance of his fight for the working class, alleging that Trump seeks to distract from the true battle. Mamdani emphasized his commitment to advocating for the very people Trump initially claimed to support but whom he ultimately betrayed.

Public Discourse and Concerns

The emergence of Mamdani’s platform has sparked heated discussions about socialism’s role in American politics. Critics assert that the rise of candidates like Mamdani represents a significant shift toward more progressive policies, which many fear could lead to a form of governance contrary to American ideals.

Lumaj’s perspective highlights the ongoing struggle between the preservation of traditional American values and the increasing acceptance of radical ideologies. He insists that a careful examination of history is crucial to understanding the potential implications of policies championed by individuals like Mamdani.

As the political climate intensifies, voices like Lumaj’s serve as a reminder of the long-standing battle against oppressive ideologies that have caused immense suffering worldwide. The quest for freedom and opportunity continues to be a focal point in the American identity.

A Call for Vigilance

In summary, Lumaj urges citizens to resist the encroachment of radical socialist policies in the U.S. He implores Americans to recognize the historical consequences of similar ideologies in other countries. The lessons learned from Albania’s past become crucial for those navigating the rapidly changing political landscape in America.

It is evident that as discussions about socialism heat up, the country must engage in informed dialogues about its future. In a time when ideologies clash, ensuring that democratic values remain at the forefront is paramount.
