Allegations Against Mohamed Soliman Highlight Concerns Over Domestic Extremism and Radicalization

The suspect accused of plotting an attack on pro-Israel demonstrators reportedly resorted to creating improvised explosive devices after being unable to purchase a firearm due to his immigration status. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian national, allegedly turned to violence following this denial.

In an affidavit from the Boulder Police Department, Soliman explained to detectives that he had completed a concealed carry class, preparing to buy a firearm. However, he discovered that his immigration status barred him from finalizing the purchase. Acting U.S. Attorney J. Bishop Grewell for the District of Colorado emphasized during a news conference that Soliman’s frustration led him to consider alternative means of committing violence.

With legal gun access restricted, Soliman revealed to authorities that he utilized online resources, specifically YouTube, to learn how to create Molotov cocktails. This decision marked a dangerous shift from frustration to action.

Details of the Planned Attack

Soliman allegedly constructed a total of 18 Molotov cocktails, preparing to use them against demonstrators gathering in Boulder on June 1. The event, known as the “Run For Their Lives,” aimed to support Israeli hostages. He is accused of launching two incendiary devices into the crowd during this peaceful demonstration, which dramatically escalated tensions.

According to Judicial District Attorney Michael Dougherty, investigations have revealed four additional victims, bringing the total to 12. Fortunately, none of the victims sustained fatal injuries. Dougherty urged victims and witnesses to step forward and cooperate with law enforcement. As the situation continues to develop, formal charges against Soliman are expected to be filed later this week.

Victims and Incident Response

Authorities confirmed that most victims have already been released from local hospitals, though they did not provide specific details about the severity of injuries sustained in the attack. Eyewitnesses noted that Soliman threw what resembled a glass bottle, which ignited upon impact, resulting in large flames. Additionally, he is believed to have used a commercial weed sprayer as a makeshift blowtorch.

During their investigation, authorities found multiple glass bottles containing flammable liquid, a lighter, rags, and an insecticide sprayer inside Soliman’s 2015 silver Toyota Prius. Remarkably, they also discovered a Quran and paperwork featuring the words “Israel,” “Palestine,” and “USAID,” which may shed light on his motivations.

Investigative Findings and Soliman’s State of Mind

In interviews with law enforcement, Soliman expressed no remorse for his actions, indicating a willingness to repeat the attack if given another opportunity. The affidavit indicated that he left behind an iPhone and a journal at his residence, outlining his planning and motivations for the attack.

Legal Ramifications and Potential Sentencing

Soliman faces numerous charges, including multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and possession of incendiary devices. His bond has been set at an astonishing $10 million, reflecting the severity of the allegations against him.

Dougherty articulated the severe penalties Soliman could face if convicted of all charges related to the June 1 attack. He faces 16 counts of attempted first-degree murder, which could result in up to 384 years in state prison if consecutive sentences are ordered. In addition, he faces charges of using incendiary devices and attempted use of such devices, which could contribute an additional 240 years to his sentence.

Should all convictions be handed down consecutively, Soliman’s maximum possible sentence could exceed an astounding 624 years. Beyond state charges, he has also been federally charged with committing a hate crime related to race, religion, or national origin.

A Broader Perspective on Domestic Violence and Hate Crimes

The gravity of Soliman’s actions underscores the importance of addressing domestic extremism and radicalization. Grewell remarked that no one should experience violence based on their identity. He highlighted the particular danger posed by acts of violence targeting individuals due to their race, religion, or national origin.

Grewell pointed to statements made by Soliman during the investigation, revealing that he had planned the attack for a year, motivated by animosity toward what he termed the “Zionist group.” This chilling narrative raises alarm bells about individuals who may resort to violence driven by hate.

Next Steps in the Legal Process

As the case unfolds, Soliman’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, June 5 at 3:30 PM MT, where charges will be formally filed. The scrutiny surrounding this case not only highlights the immediate threat but also the underlying issues regarding radicalization and hate-driven violence in society.

As authorities continue to investigate Soliman’s motives and connections, community leaders and law enforcement officials emphasize the need for vigilance against the rising tide of domestic extremism. The findings from this case may fuel discussions on the importance of mental health support, education, and community resilience.
