UNITED NATIONS – Recent comments from U.N. Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer have reignited concerns about the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East, known as UNRWA. Neuer claimed that the agency hired personnel who supported terrorism, particularly amid the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict that escalated after the tragic events of October 7, 2023.
The discourse surrounding UNRWA is complex. Although initially founded in 1949 to provide assistance to Palestinian refugees, public scrutiny intensified after allegations surfaced regarding potential connections between staff members and terrorists. Former President Donald Trump previously halted U.S. funding to the agency, a move which followed accusations that UNRWA personnel participated in Hamas’ violent acts.
The controversy traces back to January 2024, when former President Joe Biden cut U.S. funding to UNRWA, reflecting a significant shift in how the U.S. engages with the organization. This decision came after Israel alleged that certain UNRWA operatives had direct involvement in the conflict.
Hillel Neuer emphasized that while UNRWA was created with altruistic intentions, its mission has deviated over the years. “What was meant to be a humanitarian effort has evolved into something far removed from its original purpose,” Neuer stated.
