Deepak Paradkar, a Canadian drug violation defense attorney, was arrested amid a significant FBI operation targeting former Olympian Ryan Wedding. The U.S. Department of Justice announced these developments on Wednesday.
Ryan Wedding, a former Olympic snowboarder representing Team Canada, remains at large facing multiple serious charges. These include murder associated with a criminal enterprise, drug crimes, witness tampering, and retaliating against witnesses.
During a press conference, U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stated that Paradkar acted as Wedding’s legal counsel. According to Essayli, Paradkar allegedly suggested that Wedding should have a witness killed to potentially get the case dismissed against him.
“His lawyer advised him to kill this witness. His lawyer told him, ‘If you kill this witness, the case would be dismissed.’ That lawyer is now in custody and he will be extradited to face justice here in the United States,” Essayli remarked.
The indictment against Paradkar outlines his alleged role, stating that he, along with unknown accomplices, advised Wedding and his associate Andrew Clark that the murder of a designated victim would aid in getting the federal indictment against them dismissed.
Moreover, the indictment claims that Paradkar permitted Clark to secretly listen to his conversation with another suspect. During discussions about another murder, it is asserted that Paradkar advised his clients to switch to a different communication platform and delete any discussions regarding the murder plot.
On the same day, a separate news release from the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against Paradkar. Officials accused him of breaching client trust and professional ethics by facilitating eavesdropping on privileged conversations between Wedding and his clients, some of whom Wedding allegedly intended to harm.
According to the news release, Paradkar is described as an attorney who provided a myriad of illegal services to Wedding’s drug trafficking organization. Perhaps most concerning, he allegedly introduced Wedding to drug traffickers, assisted with bribery, and facilitated murder.
“Paradkar violated the trust of his clients and the ethics of his profession by allowing Wedding and his associates to eavesdrop on privileged communications between him and other clients, several of whom Wedding wished to murder. Wedding compensated Paradkar with luxury watches and additional fees for these illegal services,” stated the report.
Ryan Wedding reportedly issued a hit on a federal witness by posting photos of him online. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi disclosed that Wedding shared the images of the upcoming witness on a now-deleted website called ‘The Dirty News’ after being indicted in 2024.
The witness was shot dead in a Medellin, Colombia restaurant on January 31. Federal authorities subsequently raised the reward for Wedding’s capture to an astounding $15 million.
Wedding, aged 44, along with 14 alleged associates, faces accusations of orchestrating the murder of a witness in Colombia. Officials claim Wedding believed that the death of this individual would lead to the dismissal of the charges against him and those connected to his drug trafficking ring.
Currently on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List, federal officials describe Wedding as an extremely violent criminal, believed to hold responsibility for numerous murders abroad.
The FBI alleges that Wedding has been involved in trafficking substantial quantities of cocaine through Colombia and Mexico, distributing it across the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, he is said to use cryptocurrency to conceal his wealth and has purportedly ordered a series of murders throughout North America and Latin America.
Wedding represented Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City, after missing the opportunity to compete in the 1998 Games. He participated in the men’s parallel giant slalom, finishing in 24th place. The gold medal went to Switzerland’s Philipp Schoch, while Sweden’s Richard Rikardsson won silver, and U.S. competitor Chris Klug claimed the bronze.
In a disturbing twist, the FBI and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police allege that Wedding and Clark coordinated a double homicide in Ontario in November 2023, a case involving innocent bystanders due to mistaken identity. Furthermore, they are also accused of agreeing on a murder in May over a drug-related debt.
The ongoing murder and criminal enterprise charges against Wedding carry severe implications, including a mandatory minimum sentence of life imprisonment if found guilty.
The extensive allegations against Deepak Paradkar and Ryan Wedding have significant implications for the legal and law enforcement communities. The serious nature of the charges underscores the complexities involved in drug-related violence and the potential corruption within the legal representation.
As investigations continue, the judicial system will determine the appropriate measures to hold accountable those involved in these alleged crimes.
The repercussions of these allegations extend beyond the individuals directly involved, as they raise pressing questions about the integrity of legal representation in high-stakes cases related to drug trafficking and organized crime. Further developments are anticipated in the days and weeks to come.
