An American citizen faces serious charges following an alleged attempt to firebomb a branch office of the U.S. Embassy in Israel, according to a recent announcement from the Justice Department.
Joseph Neumeyer, a 28-year-old who also holds German citizenship, was apprehended outside the embassy office in Tel Aviv last week. Authorities discovered him with a backpack containing multiple Molotov cocktails, as reported by federal prosecutors.
Neumeyer has been charged with attempting to destroy a U.S. Embassy using fire or explosives. U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella, Jr. stated, “As alleged, Neumeyer, armed with potentially lethal devices, sought to cause chaos and destruction at the United States Embassy in Tel Aviv.” This emphasizes the seriousness of the charges he faces.
Originally from Colorado, Neumeyer was deported from Israel back to the United States. He appeared in a federal courtroom in New York on Sunday, where he was ordered to be held in custody pending trial.
Reports indicate that Neumeyer arrived in Israel in April. Just weeks later, on May 19, he made a series of disturbing posts on Facebook, allegedly expressing his intent to target the embassy.
One of his posts commanded, “Join me this afternoon in Tel Aviv we are burning down the U.S. embassy.” Another post declared, “Join me as I burn down the embassy in Tel Aviv. Death to America. Death to Americans and f— the west.” These threats led authorities to take swift action against him.
In addition to his threats against the embassy, Neumeyer also called for violence against several public figures, including President Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott. On the same day of these social media posts, he was spotted outside the embassy carrying the suspicious backpack.
As Neumeyer approached the embassy, he confronted a security guard, even spitting on him. When the guard attempted to detain Neumeyer, he fled, leaving the backpack behind.
Investigators discovered several bottles inside his bag, which had been converted into improvised incendiary devices, commonly known as Molotov cocktails. These devices contained flammable liquid, prompting immediate action from the Israeli National Police, including an explosive ordnance disposal team, to ensure the area was safe.
Fortunately, no injuries occurred during the incident. FBI Assistant Director in Charge Steven Jensen commented, “Neumeyer not only made threats against Americans and U.S. diplomatic missions, but also allegedly attempted to carry out those threats by bringing potentially deadly devices to the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv.”
Jensen emphasized the resolve of law enforcement, stating that Neumeyer’s arrest sends a clear message about the serious consequences of such actions. The FBI and its partners will relentlessly pursue those who threaten the safety of U.S. citizens and interests abroad.
Law enforcement found Neumeyer at a hotel where he was staying and subsequently placed him under arrest. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, underlining the gravity of his alleged actions.
Fox News Digital has reached out to both the White House and Neumeyer’s attorney from the federal public defenders’ office for further comments regarding this pressing situation. A response has yet to be publicly displayed.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threats U.S. diplomatic missions face worldwide. It raises important questions about security measures in place at embassies and how to effectively counter domestic and international threats.
As investigations continue, this case highlights the need for vigilance in protecting U.S. interests and citizens both at home and abroad. The repercussions of this case will undoubtedly resonate within the broader discussions surrounding security and international relations.
It remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will unfold for Neumeyer, but this case is a significant one, reflecting the challenges faced in a world increasingly influenced by radical ideas and actions.
