American Skier Alex Ferreira Discusses Intensifying Rivalry with Canada Ahead of 2026 Winter Olympics

As the countdown to the 2026 Winter Olympics begins, anticipation builds among athletes and fans alike. With only six months left, the focus is on Team USA as they prepare for the upcoming competitions in Milano Cortina. A significant aspect of these Games will be the renewed rivalry between the United States and Canada in the realm of winter sports.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, American men’s skiing medalist Alex Ferreira shared insights into this rivalry. Entering his third Winter Games, Ferreira identifies Canada as one of his country’s most formidable competitors, alongside New Zealand.

Intense Competition on the Slopes

Ferreira emphasized the competitive spirit he shares with Canadian skier Brendan Mackay, noting their intense rivalry during recent competitions. “Brendan and I had some of the most intense competitions in 2023 during the World Championships in Bakuriani, Georgia. Brendan ended up winning. He skied phenomenally there,” Ferreira remarked.

Looking ahead, Ferreira anticipates that the rivalry may escalate even more in the upcoming Olympics. He pointed to recent geopolitical tensions, including U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, as potential fuel for this competitive fire. “There’s certainly a bit of rivalry going on there. But both of us really want to win,” he shared.

As Ferreira prepares for the Games, he reflects on his commitment to representing the United States. “Being American, I naturally want to win. They are our neighbors up north, and they are great people. However, I want to beat them,” he stated.

Training Grounds and Advantages

Ferreira is familiar with the Canadian training grounds, having competed frequently at locations such as Windsport Park in Calgary and Whistler’s renowned ski hills. However, he believes that the slopes in Colorado provide a more intense training experience, which he considers an advantage as he approaches the competitions in Milano Cortina.

“The slopes in Colorado are definitely more intense,” Ferreira stated, acknowledging a unique aspect of Canadian skiing: the cold weather. “What makes Canada intense is definitely the cold; it’s freezing.” This similarity to conditions expected in Livigno during the Olympics could give American skiers an edge.

Attempts at Collaboration with Rivals

Despite rivalries, Ferreira has made attempts to foster cooperation among competitors. He reached out to Mackay and other Canadian rivals about the possibility of training together in Colorado. However, he understands why they may not have agreed to such a meeting. “Everyone is busy training in their own country,” he explained.

Both sides recognize the challenges of scheduling joint training sessions, leading to missed opportunities for collaboration that could enhance their skills.

Faith and Personal Growth

Beyond competition, Ferreira spoke about the role his faith plays in his life and career. As a practicing Catholic, he expressed pride in the recent elevation of an American-born Pope. “It’s spectacular. It’s a special time in history,” he noted.

Ferreira’s religious background has significantly influenced his approach to sports and life. He believes that fostering positive habits and kindness contributes to his competitive success. “Living according to the golden rule makes it easier to train and focus on my goals,” he elaborated.

A Shift in Diet for Optimal Performance

Following the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Ferreira made significant changes to his diet, ending a long period of abstaining from meat. He described the experience of enjoying a classic cheeseburger as transformative. “After a year and a half without meat, it was the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten,
