Anjelica Huston has shared insights into her enduring friendship with former partner Jack Nicholson, labeling it as an important connection even decades after their romantic relationship ended.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Huston, now 73, reflected on her bond with Nicholson, which spanned an on-and-off relationship from 1973 to 1990. Despite their past, the pair have continued to nurture their friendship. However, Huston acknowledged that their meetings have become less frequent over the years.
Huston stated, “Life gets in the way of seeing each other more often.” She went on to discuss the practical challenges, noting, “They’ve been doing endless rerouting and road work near his house, so reaching him takes hours, which can be quite frustrating. I often find myself arriving late to visit him, and that irritates him as well.”
Though their time together has diminished, Nicholson remains a source of support for Huston during challenging moments in her life.
In the January wildfires that threatened Los Angeles, Huston faced the evacuation of her ranch, which she did alongside her pets. During this trying time, her phone rang unexpectedly, revealing Nicholson on the other end. She recounted, “It is always a comfort when he calls. He reached out to check on me and offered a place to stay if I needed it during the evacuation.”
Huston described the experience as “heartbreakingly sweet,” expressing gratitude for Nicholson’s thoughtful gesture. “Looking back, I think next time I would gladly accept the invitation,” she added.
In addition to her relationship with Nicholson, Huston opened up about her personal battles in a separate interview published on the same day. She revealed that she privately fought cancer and has been cancer-free for four years, calling it a significant milestone.
Although she chose not to disclose the specific type of cancer she faced, Huston emphasized, “Reaching this point means so much to me. It is a fantastic thing, and I am incredibly proud of myself.” The Oscar-winning actress recognized her medical team, noting how wonderful her doctors have been throughout her health journey.
Huston conveyed her feelings surrounding her health struggles with sincerity. She stated, “It’s not something that came lightly; it was a big shock. However, it taught me invaluable lessons about life, like not taking things too seriously. Now, when I can, I laugh and try to keep things light.”
She received her diagnosis in 2019, shortly after completing filming for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Reflecting on the experience, she said it is common to feel hesitant about discussing such events. Rather than hiding, Huston hopes to inspire others by sharing her journey and celebrating resilience.
Huston concluded her tale by expressing her belief that life is both tenuous and beautiful. She remarked, “It also serves as a reminder that the world is vast, and we can always meet its challenges head-on.” Her candid reflections resonate deeply and serve to encourage those navigating similar struggles.
Through her dedication to maintaining friendships and her candid discussions about personal challenges, Huston provides a heartfelt glimpse into her life, proving that meaningful connections can endure the test of time, and that vulnerability can lead to profound strength.
