Caitlin Clark traded the basketball court for the golf course as she spent part of her offseason participating in a pro-am at Pelican Golf Club with golfing champions Nelly Korda and Annika Sorenstam in November.
The Indiana Fever star faced the challenge of playing the front nine holes with Korda before switching to the back nine alongside the legendary Sorenstam. After her team was eliminated from the playoffs, Clark humorously claimed she might take up golf—little did she know she would be sharing the green with one of the sport’s greatest.
In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Sorenstam reflected on her time on the course with Clark. She expressed her admiration for the young athlete, revealing that the experience made her an even bigger fan of Clark.
“It’s wonderful,” Sorenstam stated. “I’m a big fan and even more so after meeting her. She’s a great athlete, very focused, and understands what it means to accomplish a task.”
Sorenstam acknowledged Clark’s background in golf, recognizing that it plays a role in her understanding of the sport. “She has a little golf background, so she is familiar with the sport and its culture,” Sorenstam explained. “It’s important to bring new people into the sport and share the excitement.”
She added, “For us to walk around and share stories is rewarding. We have so many commonalities, from our college days to being professionals. Listening to other successful athletes and sharing experiences is always enriching.”
During a leadership summit associated with the pro-am, Clark discussed her practice routine and aspirations in golf. “I try to practice as much as I can, but there’s only so much time available. You just cross your fingers,” she admitted. “I’ve spent some time practicing, but when I joked about becoming a professional golfer, people thought I was serious. I enjoy it. I love being outdoors and competing with friends.”
Clark emphasized that despite the challenges of golfing, she values the experience of playing alongside elite athletes like Sorenstam and Korda. “It’s challenging, and being here with the best is something I look forward to,” she noted.
As Sorenstam prepares for the upcoming American Century Championship, her anticipation grows. The prestigious event will be held at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club, running from July 9 through July 13. Players and fans alike are excited for the festivities, which include top competitors from various sports taking part in the tournament.
With a striking history of achievements in golf, Sorenstam continues to be a significant influence in both the golfing world and beyond. Her involvement in events like the pro-am not only showcases her prowess but also highlights her commitment to inspiring the next generation of athletes.
The pro-am event was not just a chance for Clark to hone her golfing skills alongside icons but also a platform for both athletes to bond over shared experiences and forge lasting connections. As they navigated the greens together, the stories exchanged enriched the teamwork and showcased the importance of mentoring in sports.
With the spotlight on athletic excellence and camaraderie, events such as these serve as a reminder of how sports can unite individuals from vastly different backgrounds, creating memories that extend well beyond the golf course.
