A recent cleanup initiative at a renowned Colorado ski resort transformed into an unexpected treasure hunt, revealing an array of fascinating items alongside the typical debris.
This summer, Breckenridge Ski Resort garnered attention when its staff collaborated to eliminate an impressive 780 pounds of waste. This substantial effort, executed by around 150 dedicated employees, not only targeted the litter strewn across the slopes but also highlighted some unusual discoveries.
What Was Found?
Much of the debris originated from patrons who inadvertently dropped belongings from ski lifts. Amongst the typical items, staff unearthed a message in a bottle, sparking curiosity regarding its contents. Contrary to imaginations of long-lost love letters, a spokesperson revealed that it merely contained an old COVID-19 vaccination card.
In addition to this improbable find, employees discovered a cracked iPhone, an iPod Nano, and even a $2 Canadian coin. Oddities such as numerous vape cartridges and a bewildering hamburger flipper added a dose of humor to the event.
Every Item Tells a Story
The cleanup also revealed a wide assortment of empty bottles and miscellaneous trash. Despite the prevalent detritus, Max Winter, the resort’s senior communications manager, shared fascinating insights about the cleanup’s interesting encounters.
Winter mentioned that one of the most memorable finds—a family of moose—did not make it onto the highlight reel of the cleanup activities. Employees spotted the moose while searching for discarded items, reminding everyone of the exquisite wildlife that shares these natural spaces.

Winter elaborated on the significance of these encounters, emphasizing that these natural environments are a shared sanctuary. The team maintained their distance from the moose to promote respect for wildlife during their cleanup operation.
“It serves as a great reminder that we must all do our part to care for the environment,” he noted.

While the mountain cleanup yielded a staggering amount of refuse, Winter pointed out that much of this weight consisted of larger items, many of which were recycled or creatively repurposed. He shared that, in very rare instances, team members even reunited lost items with their original owners.
“For example, just a few years ago at our sister resort, Keystone, our crew managed to return an engraved engagement ring to a guest months after their visit,” he recalled.
