Despite a tarnished past that includes a prison sentence for a sex scandal, former congressman Anthony Weiner recently stated he believes he could navigate the political landscape better than current Democratic leaders. During an appearance on ABC’s ‘The View,’ Weiner revealed his ambitions to return to politics, specifically aiming for a seat on the New York City Council.
Weiner expressed confidence in his political abilities, insisting that his experience, despite its controversies, positions him as a more capable candidate than many of his Democratic counterparts. Notably, he used this platform to critique former Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting that her recent television appearance played a significant role in undermining her 2024 presidential campaign.
As soon as Weiner settled into his chair, he made a pointed remark aimed at Harris. He inquired, ‘By the way, was this where Kamala Harris was sitting when she blew up her campaign?’ This comment evoked laughter from the show’s co-hosts, marking a clear jab at Harris’s public image.
Weiner’s critique stemmed from an earlier segment during which Harris had struggled to articulate any significant differences she would pursue compared to then-President Biden. When asked about alternative strategies, she responded with a vague, ‘there is not a thing that comes to mind’, a moment that has been widely interpreted as a pivotal misstep for her campaign.
During the interview, Weiner further lambasted Harris’s performance when co-host Joy Behar brought up the double standards faced by male versus female candidates in politics. Behar suggested that while figures like Weiner and former President Donald Trump have faced severe scrutiny for their pasts, a female candidate like Harris remains burdened by additional challenges in seeking high office.
Weiner acknowledged the increased scrutiny of female politicians but emphasized that Harris mishandled a significantly straightforward question during her time on the show. He said, ‘The problem is, it’s a little bit too easy an answer because also there were things that Kamala Harris – I made a joking reference to the answer she gave on this show.’ He continued by describing it as a ‘softball’ question that every ambitious politician dreams about receiving, yet Harris failed to capitalize on it.
Weiner’s lengthy history in American politics, including his 2011 resignation following a scandal involving explicit photos, continues to cast a shadow over his aspirations. He was ultimately imprisoned for 21 months after being caught in a more severe scandal involving inappropriate online communications with a minor.
However, Weiner remains undeterred by his past. During this recent appearance, he expressed a desire to enter the political arena again, stating that he has a genuine belief in his abilities to connect with constituents and offer solutions in a time of political stagnation.
‘I think what I said at the time was I couldn’t imagine there would ever be a chance that either people would want me back or that I would want to get back into that again,’ he explained. His motivation seems to stem from the dismal voter turnout he observed during the recent election. Weiner noted, ‘When I woke up in November of ’24 and saw the election results… I started to say to myself, ‘Something is seriously wrong here.’
Weiner’s diagnosis of the current political climate suggests that many Democrats are playing it safe and running campaigns that lack the necessary vibrancy to inspire voters. He stated, ‘Too many Democratic candidates were running frictionless campaigns,’ which he believes contributed to a decline in voter engagement.
Contrary to the mindset of many politicians, he feels a responsibility to address the prevailing sense of dissatisfaction among constituents. Weiner articulated, ‘My past is not a good enough reason… not to get off the couch and try.’ This sentiment conveys a sense of eagerness to enact meaningful change.
Co-host Ana Navarro posed a challenging question regarding his ability to seek political office in light of his scandal-ridden past. She pressed him on why the citizens of New York should consider granting him another chance.
Weiner responded thoughtfully, ‘I’m doing the opposite of what a lot of politicians do in my position – ignore that problem, pretend it didn’t happen, blame someone else. I am saying, yes, I did these things. I got into recovery. I tried to make my life better.’ His commitment to transparency and honesty in dealing with his past is an essential aspect of his current campaign strategy.
In closing, Weiner noted, ‘Look, all I can ever be is who I am right now and that brought me to this space.’ With this admission, he attempts to redefine his narrative and offers voters a new perspective on his political re-entry.
