In a shocking incident, nearly two dozen armed suspects targeted a jewelry store in California, executing a smash-and-grab robbery that has raised alarms about organized retail theft in the state.
The robbery unfolded at Heller Jewelers, located in the Bay Area city of San Ramon, where surveillance footage captured a group of masked individuals storming the store. This brazen attack occurred on a Monday, and the culprits used hammers and pickaxes to shatter display cases, according to the San Ramon Police Department.
Authorities confirmed that the thieves made off with approximately $1 million in high-value merchandise. The audacity of the crime highlights a troubling trend of retail thefts sweeping through California.
According to police reports, at least one suspect fired a gunshot through the front entrance, contributing to the chaos as others wielded firearms, threatening employees inside the store.

In the aftermath of the robbery, several individuals were arrested in Oakland and surrounding suburbs, including two brothers identified as 27-year-old Jimmy Ray and Michael Ray.
In a separate yet similar incident just two weeks earlier in San Jose, an 88-year-old jewelry store owner sustained injuries after thieves forcefully shoved her to the ground while executing another smash-and-grab robbery. This event was also captured on security cameras.
In the San Jose incident, video footage revealed that the perpetrators reversed an SUV into the store’s glass windows before a group of over a dozen individuals rushed inside, seizing items from display cases.
In light of rising organized thefts, California responded by establishing its own Organized Retail Crime Task Force aimed at confronting large-scale retail crimes. Leading this initiative is the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
As of August 2025, the task force reported over 700 arrests and the recovery of nearly 150,000 stolen items valued at around $8 million.
California Governor Gavin Newsom acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, stating, “We are serious about stamping out crime rings that target California’s businesses and undermine public safety. We appreciate the work of our law enforcement partners statewide to apprehend these bad actors.”
