An Army football player has emerged as a hero after he and his father intervened to rescue a man from a burning vehicle in upstate New York over the weekend. Their quick actions likely saved the man’s life just moments before the car was engulfed in flames.
Larry Pickett Jr., currently a second-year cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point, plays as a safety for the Army Black Knights. He was spending time with his family following a game against Tarleton State when the incident occurred.
While returning to campus on Saturday night, Larry Jr. and his father, Larry Pickett Sr., noticed downed power lines and a car that had collided with a utility pole. Without hesitation, they exited their vehicle to investigate the scene further.
In a subsequent interview on the program Fox & Friends, Larry Jr. recounted the moment they saw a man in urgent need of assistance. “My father and I both got out of the car, ran toward that car, and saw that there was a gentleman who needed help,” he shared.
Video footage posted by his father captured the distressing scene, showcasing the duo rushing towards the burning car to pull the man to safety. In the background, the crackling of electricity from the downed power lines could be heard.
As the video progressed, it showed the white sedan become fully engulfed in flames, emphasizing the urgency of their actions. Larry Sr. expressed his gratitude on social media, declaring, “Thank you Jesus that this man will live to see another day! I am so grateful for my son LJ for saving his life! Not only is he making an impact in the classroom and on the football field at the United States Military Academy at West Point, but he’s also making a difference in his community.”
Reflecting on the incident, he recalled, “Just after midnight, I watched in awe as my son, Larry Pickett Jr., ran toward a burning vehicle, ignoring the downed power lines crackling around it. With immense courage, he pulled a man to safety, saving him from a fiery fate.”
The Fort Montgomery Fire Department confirmed the crash, stating that a vehicle had struck a utility pole on Route 9W and had “became fully engulfed in flames.” In the wake of the heroic actions, West Point issued a statement praising Larry Jr. for his bravery.
The academy wrote, “We’re proud of the heroic actions taken Saturday night by Cadet Larry Pickett Jr., a second-year cadet and ArmyWP_Football player, and his father who are seen pulling a driver to safety in a video online taken by the family. Their actions are the embodiment of the US Army Values.”
As he enters his second season with the Army Black Knights, Larry Jr. brings a wealth of talent and dedication to the team. He previously enjoyed a successful football career at Enloe High School in North Carolina, where he earned All-State honors twice and All-Conference honors three times. Although he did not play during his freshman season, he made an impact during his college debut against Tarleton State, registering one tackle.
This recent act of bravery demonstrates not only Larry Jr.’s athletic talents but also his character and commitment to serving others. His response to the emergency situation showcases the values instilled in him as a cadet and as a member of the military community.
