Pro wrestling star Austin Aries has made a surprising comeback to Major League Wrestling by stepping behind the microphone as a commentator for Battle Riot VII instead of participating as a competitor.
Known by his real name Daniel Healy, Aries has had a versatile career across various promotions, including WWE, TNA, and DEFY. His previous stint with MLW lasted from 2018 to 2019.
Despite facing health challenges, Aries enthusiastically joined his colleague Joe Dombrowski to provide commentary for the event.
“It feels good,” Aries stated regarding his return to the MLW fold. “I hadn’t been in MLW for several years. Although I’ve worked with them on a few occasions throughout my career, I never had a sustained period of involvement. It’s exciting to witness the company’s growth and the momentum they’ve been building while attracting new talent.”
Aries was eager to take on the commentary role as the opportunity arose.
Drawing from Extensive Commentary Experience
Aries is no stranger to the announcer’s table. He previously provided commentary for WWE’s NXT Roadblock: End of the Line premium live event alongside Michael Cole and Corey Graves in December 2016. He also contributed to some of WWE’s weekly programming in the past.
When speaking with Fox News Digital, Aries shared that he garners much of his influence from legendary commentators such as Bobby Heenan and Jesse Ventura.
“I’m trying to be my own version,” he explained, “but those guys certainly inspire my style as a heel commentator who adds a unique slant. What I enjoy about their approach is the perspective they offer from having competed in the ring themselves. This insight allows me to provide a viewpoint that a commentator without in-ring experience simply cannot deliver.”
Aries has built a reputation as a decorated champion throughout his wrestling journey.
His accolades include being a three-time TNA World Heavyweight Champion, a six-time TNA X-Division Champion, and a two-time Ring of Honor World Champion. Furthermore, he achieved recognition as he was ranked No. 12 on Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s Top 500 wrestlers list in 2013.
At 47 years old, Aries views his transition to commentary as a natural progression. Nevertheless, he does not rule out the possibility of returning to the ring in the future.
“I had an opportunity to do commentary during my time with WWE,” he recounted. “After an injury opened that door, I truly enjoyed the experience and felt comfortable. It lingered in the back of my mind as I slowly considered the possibility of transitioning to commentary as my in-ring career slowed down.”
“MLW approached me to see if I was interested in this role,” Aries added. “At my age, I can still wrestle, but I choose my spots carefully. There’s nothing saying I won’t step back into the ring with MLW down the line. For now, my objective is to excel as a color commentator and embrace this role while still keeping an eye on the ring.”
Upcoming MLW Events Highlight Aries’s New Role
As Aries prepares for his upcoming appearance, he is set to lend his commentary to MLW’s next event, Azteca Lucha, scheduled for May 10 in Chicago.
This event will feature a clash for the MLW World Heavyweight Championship between Matt Riddle and Donovan Dijak. Additionally, Alex Hammerstone is set to face off against Satoshi Kojima, along with other stars from MLW and Mexico’s Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre promotion.
With Aries’s engaging personality and seasoned insight, fans can anticipate an exciting commentary experience. His return to MLW marks an interesting phase in his career, fueling the anticipation surrounding future wrestling events.
