UConn’s Star Player Leads Team to Victory
In a thrilling matchup at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase, Azzi Fudd delivered an impressive performance, scoring 31 points to propel No. 1 UConn to a hard-fought 72-69 victory against the No. 6 ranked Michigan Wolverines. Adding to this success, Sarah Strong contributed 16 points and an impressive 20 rebounds, showcasing her versatility on the court.
UConn, currently boasting a 5-0 record, appeared poised to dominate early in the game. The Huskies quickly extended their lead to 17 points midway through the third quarter. However, the Wolverines (4-1) demonstrated their resilience, orchestrating a remarkable 13-0 run that helped them cut the deficit to just four points, 49-45, heading into the final quarter.
At a critical moment in the game, Fudd ended a nearly eight-minute scoring drought for the Huskies with a crucial three-pointer. This shot ignited a personal 9-0 run for Fudd, helping UConn regain a double-digit lead.
Michigan refused to back down, clawing their way back to within two points, 68-66, in the final minute. A pivotal three-pointer by Syla Swords with just 22.2 seconds remaining kept hopes alive for the Wolverines. The situation intensified when Michigan fouled Fudd shortly afterward. Calm under pressure, she sank both free throws, restoring a two-possession lead for the Huskies.
Swords quickly responded with another deep three-pointer, trimming UConn’s lead to a narrow 70-69 with about 12 seconds left. However, Fudd’s ability to hit another pair of free throws with less than eight seconds remaining ultimately sealed the game for the Huskies. Michigan managed to get off a final shot attempt, but time ran out before they could tie the game.
Syla Swords finished with an impressive 29 points, while Olivia Olson contributed 18 points for Michigan. Collectively, the Wolverines put forth a spirited effort despite the loss, demonstrating their competitive prowess against a top-tier opponent.
Strong’s formidable presence significantly impacted the game’s flow. In the first quarter alone, she recorded six points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. As a result, the Huskies cruised to a commanding 22-5 lead by the end of the opener. Fudd took the spotlight in the second quarter, notching 13 points, which further extended UConn’s advantage to 45-27 by halftime.
This contest marked the third occasion in two seasons that Michigan faced a No. 1 ranked team. Last year, the Wolverines lost to South Carolina in their season opener and fell to UCLA, also a member of the Big Ten. Prior to these encounters, they only faced ranked No. 1 teams once before, suffering a defeat to Iowa in 1988.
Looking ahead, UConn prepares to take on Utah in their next game, while Michigan is set to face Syracuse on Sunday. Both teams are eager to build on their current performances as they continue their seasons.
