Recent analysis reveals that several individuals charged in the Prairieland Detention Center anti-ICE attack on Independence Day have extensive backgrounds in radical protest activities. These histories shed light on the motivations and affiliations of those involved in the violent incident.
Ines Soto, a notable member of the group of ten charged with attempted murder of federal officers and firearm offenses, caught national attention due to her prior arrests for protest-related activities. According to K-HOU 11, she faced charges at a protest in 2016 for allegedly resisting arrest during a demonstration against a speech by Richard Spencer at Texas A&M University. Now aged 40, Soto was reported to have been released on a $10,000 bond following her recent charges.
Notably, another individual charged in the case, Savanna Batten, also displayed a pattern of protest involvement. KERA News highlighted her participation in the Occupy Dallas movement in 2011, where she was arrested for allegedly blocking access to a Chase Bank branch. Although the case ended with her completing community service, it initiates questions about her ongoing activism.
Batten further intensified scrutiny with her anti-ICE activism, which became particularly evident in June 2018 when she was charged with obstructing a highway near a Dallas ICE facility. Like her previous charge, this case was dismissed in 2019 as part of a diversion program.
Reports indicate that Benjamin Song, another key figure captured by the FBI during the incident, has significant ties to radical protest movements. Known for his participation in a 2023 lawsuit regarding a counter-protest at a drag brunch event in Fort Worth, Texas, Song’s associations with the Elm Fork John Brown Gun Club, a pro-arms leftist group, further characterize his radical stance. His earlier arrest in 2020 during protests in Austin for allegedly assaulting a public servant paints a clearer picture of his militant activism.
Social media activity from Song reveals an outspoken advocate for anti-system ideologies. Posts calling for the abolition of police and advocating for radical social change reveal a deep-rooted political motivation. Additionally, his involvement in martial arts appears to intersect with tactical activism, raising concerns about the implications of his activities.
The incident on Independence Day escalated quickly, resulting in significant violence against law enforcement. According to a criminal complaint, Song is accused of firing AR-15-style rifles at two correctional officers and a local police officer. Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy E. Larson emphasized the seriousness of this ambush, stating that such violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated in the Northern District of Texas.
Describing the events, Larson stated, “Make no mistake, this was not a peaceful protest. This was an ambush on federal and local law enforcement officers.
