A serene day at the beach took a terrifying turn for a lifeguard at Asbury Park’s 3rd Avenue Beach when she was impaled by a beach umbrella.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, prompting first responders to rush to the Jersey Shore after receiving reports of a young woman injured by a stranded umbrella.
Upon arrival, fellow lifeguards discovered the victim lying near the lifeguard stand. The umbrella stake had pierced her left shoulder, protruding almost a foot from her arm, reported Asbury Park Fire Chief Kevin Keddy.
To facilitate a safe transport, first responders swiftly cut the umbrella stake. Fortunately, the lifeguard remained alert and conscious throughout the ordeal.
“Tough is a good word to describe her,” Keddy remarked, emphasizing her resilience.
Paramedics transported the injured lifeguard to a nearby hospital. Although her precise condition was not immediately disclosed, witnesses noted she appeared stable when taken for medical attention.
While the exact cause of how the lifeguard became impaled remains uncertain, Chief Keddy underscored the importance of securing beach umbrella stakes firmly in the sand to prevent such accidents.
A recent report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has raised alarms about the increasing frequency of airborne umbrella incidents. The agency highlighted that these situations have become
