Behind Royal Walls: Queen Elizabeth’s Memorable Encounter with a Controversial Guest

State visits often bring grandeur, but they can also lead to unexpected and awkward moments hidden behind the palace gates.

In July, Buckingham Palace shared plans for a state visit from President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, taking place from September 17 to 19. King Charles III welcomed the couple at Windsor Castle, marking a historic occasion as Trump became the first U.S. president invited for two state visits by a British monarch, following his visit hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2019.

During grand celebrations filled with ceremonial splendor, royal experts noted that no gathering could quite match Queen Elizabeth’s cringe-worthy interaction with a notorious guest.

According to information from the official royal family website, state visits are conducted upon the recommendation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Typically, guests are treated to a lavish state banquet on the first night, with around 150 attendees invited based on cultural, diplomatic, or economic relations with the visiting country.

While such formal affairs aim for flawless execution, occasional gaffes can occur.

A Discordant Encounter with Nicolae Ceaușescu

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams recounted one of the most embarrassing state visits in 1978 involving Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife, Elena. Preoccupied with fears of being eavesdropped on at Buckingham Palace, the couple felt more comfortable in the gardens. Queen Elizabeth, upon encountering them, famously hid behind a bush to avoid engaging in conversation.

Fitzwilliams elaborated that the queen found the couple to be ghastly.

An Extraordinary Hiding Spot

Royal author Robert Hardman further recounted this surreal episode in the ITV documentary titled “Queen: Inside the Crown.” He stated, “During their stay, she took her beloved corgis for a stroll in the palace gardens. Spotting them approaching, she thought, ‘I simply can’t face talking to them.’ Hence, in an unprecedented moment, she sought refuge behind a bush to evade her unwanted guests.”

This turned out to be a defining moment for Queen Elizabeth, illustrating her displeasure with hosting the infamous dictator. The British government had made the controversial decision to invite Ceaușescu, a move that sparked scrutiny and questions from the press regarding such an invitation.

Following this event, Hardman recalled that journalists began to challenge the foreign secretary about the invitation. They openly questioned, “Why are we welcoming this monster to Britain?”

Definitive Displeasure from the Queen

It’s unclear whether CeauÈ™escu ever noticed the queen concealing herself in the bushes. Nonetheless, it became widely understood that she ardently opposed the state visit, as revealed by various reports.

Former British Foreign Secretary Lord David Owen remarked during the documentary that there were numerous instances when the queen found herself displeased during state visits. He highlighted that the royal family endures many diverse individuals, yet Ceaușescu was beyond her threshold of tolerance.

Additional Noteworthy Guest Incidents

Fitzwilliams pointed out another instance where the queen’s dissatisfaction was apparent. During a 1973 visit from Zaire’s President Mobutu Sese Seko, his wife, Marie-Antoinette, brought her dog along illegally. An enraged queen demanded that the animal be removed, prompting her corgis to be quarantined.

According to Hardman, Mobutu represented a significant low in the history of state visits that left the queen quite discontented.

Gaffes and Unforgettable Moments

Adding to this collection of gaffes, British royals expert Hilary Fordwich recounted a memorable faux pas involving President Jimmy Carter. During a state dinner, he reportedly kissed the Queen Mother on the lips, a moment that later led her to express her astonishment to her biographer, noting he was the only man since her late husband, King George VI, to have done so.

Carter later disputed this characterization, denying that he had overstepped any bounds during the encounter. He recalled the event in his autobiography, expressing his disappointment concerning the media’s narrative surrounding the kiss.

British broadcaster Helena Chard shared that while many guests are traditionally cautious around royalty, the Obamas stood out. During a visit in 2009, former First Lady Michelle Obama placed her arm around the queen, breaking the expected protocol. In her memoir “Becoming,” Obama recounted bonding with Queen Elizabeth over shared discomfort with their fashionable yet constricting shoes.

The Legacy of Surprise at State Visits

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth in 2022 at the age of 96, her legacy of memorable encounters continues to influence state visits today, including those of King Charles III.

In July, French President Emmanuel Macron showcased a charming side at Windsor Castle’s state banquet. Photographers captured him pulling out Kate Middleton’s chair and waiting for her to sit before taking his own place beside her. His playful wink during a toast sparked a viral moment on social media.

A Piece of Advice for State Guests

For individuals fortunate enough to receive an invitation to such prestigious gatherings, Chard offers a sound suggestion. Reflecting on Queen Elizabeth’s extensive travels aboard the royal yacht Britannia, she noted the unusual gifts often presented, ranging from roasted pigs to exotic animals. Many of these peculiar offerings faced an uncertain fate, occasionally even being tossed overboard to the sharks.

As the royal family continues to welcome international dignitaries, the intrigue surrounding these state visits is sure to persist, providing future guests with both unforgettable moments and valuable lessons.
